Hendry rated as best-ever player
Stephen Hendry is currently second in the world rankings
Seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry has been named the greatest snooker player of all time by the authors of a new book.

Hendry has been rated ahead of Joe Davis by Luke Williams and Paul Gadsby, joint authors of Master of the Baize.

They said: "A major component of his overall ability was playing to his maximum potential under the highest amounts of pressure."

Steve Davis is ranked third, ahead of Alex Higgins and Ronnie O'Sullivan.

But there is no place in the top ten for one of snooker's favourite sons, six-times world title runner-up Jimmy White.

The authors graded the players in six categories: break building, potting, safety play, temperament, bravery and impact.

The last category measured the effect each player had not only on how the game is played but also the extent to which they introduced the sport to a wider audience.

Masters of the Baize is published by Mainstream Publishing and is released on Thursday, 14 April.
