STEVE DAVIS [Snooker]
Davis dominated the snooker tables during the 1980s and was made an MBE in 1988. Over the course of his career the man immortalised by satirical TV show Spitting Image as Steve 'Interesting' Davis won six World Championships.
1989 Winner
NICK FALDO [Golf]
After Europe's Ryder Cup team had triumphed in America two years previously, Faldo won the first of his US Masters titles in 1989. He became one of only two golfers to win the Sports Personality of the Year and has so far won six Majors.
1990 Winner
PAUL GASCOIGNE [Football]
Gascoigne, the most gifted and unpredictable English footballer of his generation, was the inspiration behind England reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup in 1990. His tears in Turin sparked "Gazza-mania" and ensured his place in football folklore.
1991 Winner
LIZ McCOLGAN [Athletics]
McColgan was Britain's most successful women's middle distance runner of the era. Within just a few months of giving birth to her first child in 1990, the Scot was crowned the world 10,000m champion in Tokyo.
1992 Winner
NIGEL MANSELL [Motor Racing]
Mansell won the season's first five Grand Prix races, and nine in total to take the Formula One World title in emphatic fashion in his Williams. Mansell is one of only three two-time winners of the Sports Personality of the Year title.
