John Higgins beat Mark Williams 10-4

John Higgins produced snooker of the highest quality to destroy Mark Williams in the final of the UK Championship.

The Scotsman laid the foundations of victory in the first session when he ruthlessly punished any slips by Williams to claim a 7-2 lead.

He returned from the interval in similar mood, taking the 10th and 11th frames with breaks of 40 and 76 respectively leaving Williams with a mountain to climb.

The world number one at least managed to put off the inevitable by claiming the next two frames with 51 breaks in each to leave him trailing 9-4 at the mid-session break.

But Higgins wrapped things up in the 14th frame despite missing a simple black off the spot when well set which could have cost him the frame.

Williams was unable to make the chance pay and Higgins sealed his victory with a 44 break.

Severely punished

The damage was done in the first session when Williams could only look and admire as the 'Wizard from Wizshaw' compiled three century breaks and three 50s.

The Welshman made few mistakes, but those he did make were punished severely by Higgins.

Williams made a 73 and 117 himself but just could not live with Higgins' sizzling display.

Higgins on top

But nothing disturbed Higgins during the session after opening up with a 73 and 131.

Williams came back in the third frame but Higgins moved up a gear to take the next four.

The 25-year-old Scot produced arguably the shot of the championship in the sixth.

After being snookered on a red at the bottom cushion, Higgins created bend with his cueball to find the red and snooker the white behind the black - the shot was met with rapturous applause from the Bournemouth crowd.

Higgins, who is getting married on 22 December, takes home a 78,000 first prize.
