Barry Hawkins delight at Crucible win

Kent's Barry Hawkins said he felt like a world champion following his first round win over Stephen Maguire.

Hawkins' 10-9 success booked him a second-round place at the Crucible for the first time.

The 31-year-old told BBC Sport: "To finally win a match here, it feels like I've won the World Championship.

"I need self-belief and this gives me a lot a confidence. I won't get carried away because it's only one match, but I'm excited to be in the next round."

Winless in his five previous visits to the Crucible, Hawkins led 4-0 and 6-3 before Scot Maguire fought back to force a deciding frame.

But the world number 26 recovered with a break of 92 - the highest of the match - to ensure a last-16 meeting with either Mark Allen or Matthew Stevens.

"I just tried to stay calm and stay positive and I think that showed in the last frame," he added.

"It definitely helped that I've played some tough matches here in the past.

"Anything can happen now. Hopefully I can go and play me game and relax. After that, you never know.

"Whoever I play will be a really tough match, but I'm just looking forward to it."
