Americans certainly didn’t invent the apple pie, but they made it their own. The first printed recipe for apple pie comes from Geoffrey Chaucer in England, in 1381. As the English started heading to the New World, they brought with them their own apple pie recipes, turning this staple pie into an American tradition from the start. (But today’s American recipes include an ample supply of sugar, something lacking in Chaucer’s version.)
