Longest-serving chief minister of Maharashtra till date, and the only one to return to power after completing full five-year term. Many journalists and experts of political studies attribute the rise of right wing party Shiv Sena in 1970s to his policy of building up Shiv Sena as a counterweight to the Communist-led labour unions in Mumbai

Was noted for attempts to destroy the clout of Mumbai underworld by destroying their money and muscle power, including the arrest of well-known gangsters Pappu Kalani, MLA from Ulhasnagar, and Bhai Thakur (elder brother of gangster-MLA Hitendra Thakur). He is also remembered for his work in water conservation

Son of former MLC Late Gangadharrao Fadnavis and mother Sarita, Director of Vidarbha Premier Cooperative Housing Finance Society. Studied at Saraswati Vidyalaya and Dharampeth Science College. Graduated in Law from Nagpur University, stood 3rd in merit list. Became corporator at the age of 22, and mayor when he was 27 (2nd youngest mayor in the history of India) in 1997. Elected MLA for first time from West Nagpur in 1999 and then in 2004. Elected MLA from South-West Nagpur in 2009 and 2014. President, BJP Maharashtra in 2013. Has served on various committees in legislature. Received best Parliamentarian of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly award in 2003, among many others.
