The American Association of Neuropathologists (AANP) began around 1930 as a professional and educational organization representing American Neuropathologists. It was incorporated in the State of Pennsylvania in May 1960. Over the years the Association has grown to over 800 members with many foreign members. The purpose of the Association is to advance the science and practice of neuropathology.

An annual meeting is held each June. The meeting includes a one-day Special Course on topic of interest with invited faculty, two days of scientific sessions (platform and poster) in which members or their guests present original research, an evening Diagnostic Slide Session and a half-day Presidential Symposium. The annual meeting has been approved by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education for category 1 CME on an hour-per-hour basis.

Since 1981, the official forum of the American Association of Neuropathologists has been the Journal of Neuropathology and Experimental Neurology, one of the premier neuroscience journals in the world.

Membership in the AANP is divided into Affiliate, Associate, and Active categories with annual dues of $140, $155, and $165, respectively. Membership privileges include, among others, a yearly subscription to the Journal of Neuropathology and Experimental Neurology, and admission with reduced registration fee to the annual meeting.
