In the last few years amazing new archaeological evidence has thrown light on a culture not that far removed from our own, a society with similar obsessions, similar anxieties, similar highs and lows. In addition, recent technological advances have enabled scholars to decipher material which has previously been completely unreadable.
Have the people of the Roman empire anything to teach us? How did they treat their ethnic minorities and differing religious groups? How did they keep the lower orders happy? Since the emperor had supreme power, how did he also manage to be perceived as "a man of the people"? How important was education and what was on the curriculum? And how did they find the time to write so many letters? |
