Drake’s ‘One Dance’ Is First Song to Reach 1 Billion Plays on Spotify

The year of Drake continues, as Toronto’s finest has just racked up a new record, becoming the first artist to reach one billion plays on Spotify for a single track with his smash “One Dance.” The titanic tally clicked over this week (sitting at over 1.001 million as of press time), giving Drizzy yet another trophy to hang on the wall in 2016. The news came just days after Drake took all three top spots on Apple Music’s year-end charts, with his Views album besting Rihanna’s ANTI, Adele’s 25, Frank Ocean’s Blonde and Justin Bieber’s Purpose to lead Apple’s Top 25 Albums chart.

“One Dance,” also featuring Wizkid & Kyla, has turned into the rapper’s biggest smash, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for ten weeks and landing at No. 1 on Apple’s Top 25 Songs chart, outpacing Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop The Feeling,” Rihanna’s “Work” (featuring Drake), Flo Rida’s “My House” and Lukas Graham’s “7 Years.” Both charts compile streams and download data.

Drake fourth album opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in June and topped charts in the U.K., Australia and various markets around the globe. He later collected four pieces of hardware at the American Music Awards (from a record 13 nominations), won in major categories at the Billboard Music Awards and MTV Europe Music Awards and landed an Apple Music commercial.

He’s going into 2017 with eight Grammy nominations and Views has just been certified quadruple platinum in the U.S, an honor marking 4 million units sold with 1,500 streams counting as one certifiable unit.
