SISTAR’s Soyu & Junggigo Send ‘Some’ to No. 1 on K-Pop Hot 100

Chart highlights from the K-Pop Hot 100 and beyond featuring BTS, S.M. The Ballad, B.A.P, TVXQ!,

It’s a SISTAR-SISTAR switch at the top of the K-Pop Hot 100 this week.

Just five months after member Soyou topped the chart with her collaboration “Stupid in Love” featuring Mad Clown, she takes the No. 1 crown with a new collaboration, this time with Junggigo and Geeks’ Lil’ Boi titled “Some.” The second collaboration project to come under Starship X — an independent music label of Starship Entertainment — “Some” is a mid-tempo, feel-good track. It knocks Hyorin’s three-week No. 1 “Goodbye” from the top slot.

The song was put together again by Kim Do Hon and Min Yeon Jae, the dream team responsible for “Stupid in Love.” The official music video features Soyu’s bandmate Dasom and B1A4’s Baro and has snapped up more than 1.1 million views to date.

Soyu’s second solo No. 1 gives the singer her overall sixth No. 1. Before this latest chart topper, Soyu was tied with SISTAR rapper Bora for overall K-Pop No. 1s within the group. Both girls have four from SISTAR’s singles, while Bora earned her fifth overall via “Gone Not Around Any Longer” as a member of Sistar19. Soyu now has six overall with “Some.” Meanwhile, leader Hyorin has a whopping eight overall.

SISTAR’s domination of the K-Pop chart is clear. The closest girl group to have some comparable to the group is Tae Yeon of Girls’ Generation, who has two No. 1s with her group and one as a solo artist.

Funnily enough, Soyou’s second No. 1 comes while her first is still charting. “Stupid Love” is still hanging out in the K-Pop Hot 100, dipping to No. 85, from No. 74, in its 23rd week on the chart.

Just below Soyu is the seventh soundtrack single off super-popular drama “My Love From the Star” titled “Every Moment of You” by “ballad king” Sung Si-Kyung. The track skyrockets to No. 2 for this week’s Hot Shot Debut.

The piano ballad, which was written by the artist himself, highlights the drama’s love scene between lead actors Jeon Ji Hyun and Kim Soo Hyun. According to AGB Nielsen Media Research, the drama hit its highest rating with a 26.7% viewer score. The show’s immense popularity puts three more of its soundtracks in the Top 10 this week: Hyorin’s “Goodbye” (No. 3), Huh Gak’s “Tears Like Today” (No. 4) and Lyn’s “My Destiny” (No. 10).

The soundtrack to “My Love From the Star” is even making an impression Stateside with Sung Si-Kyung’s “Every Moment of You” bowing on the World Digital Songs chart. See below to find out where he charted.

Hyorin’s three-week chart topper “Goodbye” — the longest-running No. 1 of 2014 so far — finally ends it reigns and dips to No. 3 this week. The SISTAR singer earns another hit though with her K-pop version of “Let It Go,” lifted from the South Korean edition of the “Frozen” soundtrack, was released to online retailers and starts at No. 5.

Stateside, Idina Menzel’s rendition of “Let It Go” stays strong at No. 18 on the Hot 100 while Demi Lovato’s take, which Hyorin’s sounds most inspired by production-wise, jumps one spot to No. 55 this week.

Below Hyorin is S.M. The Ballad, which refers to the artists from South Korean super-label, SM Entertainment — home to Girls’ Generation, SHINee, f(x), EXO, TVXQ! and more — who team together to release an album of ballads. The highest-charting entry from the set is “Breath,” a stirring new track by Girls’ Generation leader Tae Yeon and SHINee member Jonghuyn. The track starts its chart run at No. 6.

The ballad incorporates classic elements like gorgeous strings and piano melodies with contemporary sounds like finger snaps and subtle electronic bleeps. The duo’s voices combine on the powerful chorus, highlighting their years of vocal growth.

“Breath” isn’t the only S.M. The Ballad entry to make a dent on the chart this week either: “A Day Without You,” a duet between Jonghyun and EXO member Chen debuts at No. 21; Tae Yeon’s solo contribution, “Set Me Free,” hits No. 28; “When I Was… When U Were…” by f(x) member Krystal and Chen drops in at No. 44. Each track is lifted off the new LP, “S.M THE BALLAD: Vol. 2: Breath.”

Meanwhile, rising girl group Ladies’ Code — one of K-Town’s five artists to watch in 2014 — continues its climb to the top, earning its biggest chart hit with “So Wonderful” at No. 18.
