Some of K-pop’s most popular vocalists showcase their talent on Primary’s brand new Pop album.
On Wednesday (Aug. 30), the Korean musician and producer dropped the six-track exploration of pop music with the help of INFINITE’s Kim Sungkyu, GOT7’s JB, EXID’s Solji, B1A4’s Sandeul, Highlight’s Yang Yoseop, and Soyou, formerly of recently disbanded girl group Sistar. Though he’s collaborated with K-pop singers before — AOA’s former member ChoA featured on what was one of the best Korean songs of 2015 — this is Primary’s first album to solely highlight the idol aspect of Korea’s entertainment industry.
In the past, Primary’s typically veered towards hip-hop & R&B with electropop elements, but for Pop the artist teamed up with producer 1of1 to delve deep into the brand of saccharine light pop that is all the rage in Korea’s local music market. Fronted by the funky single “Right?” featuring Soyou, each song on the EP explores a different pop style: Solji’s “Diet” features mellow nu-disco vibes, Sandeul’s “Pick Up” is a groovy piano-based track filled with lilting synths, JB’s “Hush” draws on the singer’s tendancies towards smooth R&B, Yang’s “Tükk” is a brassy poprock tune, while Kim’s “Drama” rounds things out with playful electropop.
Pop is Primary’s second EP released this month, a follow up to Shininryu, which was released on on Aug. 4th and featured a variety of non-idol vocalists.
