Don’t Look Now, But One Direction Is Making Great Rock Music

His 16-city summertime trek through markets in the U.S. and Canada kicked off on July 9 in Buffalo, N.Y., and continued through mid-August. Highlights from the North American leg include a sold out run of two shows in Montreal (July 25-26), the tour’s fifth Canadian stop since its November 2013 launch.

The pop star also performed in Ottawa this summer as well as Toronto, Vancouver and Edmonton during the opening leg. Shows in two European markets and four of the six cities scheduled in Australia and New Zealand during the fall were also reported this week, bringing Timberlake’s ongoing tour gross closer and closer to the $200 million mark. More than 1.7 million fans have seen the 20/20 Experience tour since it began on Nov. 6, 2013 in New York City.

One Direction makes its last stand on the Hot Tours recap for the year, having wrapped the massive Where We Are stadium tour that topped $290 million in sales after 69 performances. The final three venues on the tour schedule were reported this week, giving the boy band the No. 4 Hot Tours ranking with a three-show gross of $13.1 million. A total of 157,042 tickets were sold at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome, Raymond James Stadium in Tampa and the tour’s final venue, Sun Life Stadium in Miami.

With concerts in 19 countries in North and South America and Europe from April 25 through October 5, the Where We Are tour logged a total attendance count of 3,439,560 during its 5-month span.

Pop diva Lady Gaga lands in the second slot on the weekly ranking of top-grossing tours with more than $46.9 million in revenue reported from her world tour, dubbed artRAVE: The ARTPOP Ball.

The concerts in this week’s tally, reported by promoter Live Nation, span a four-month period from June 3 through Oct. 5 and were attended by more than half a million fans at 39 performances.  On the road this year in support of her album ARTPOP, released last November, Gaga is now in the final stretch of the tour that has visited 14 countries since kicking off on May 4. With treks through North America, Asia and Australia behind her, Gaga is now in Europe where the tour will wrap on Nov. 24. With 15 cities remaining on the schedule, the overall gross now tops $60 million and counting.

Robbie Williams scores a Hot Tours mention, earning the No. 3 ranking with $16.5 million in sales from nine performances on his Swing Both Ways tour. The English pop star hit the road in late April, performing in 16 cities in European prior to a U.K. jaunt that began on June 13 in Belfast.

The seven-city swing through his home country was capped by a four-night stand at London’s O2 Arena (July 8-9, 11-12) with $8.4 million in sales from more than 62,000 sold seats. A single performance at Manchester’s Phones 4u Arena is also included in this report, as well as two-show runs in two markets during the tour’s four-city swing through Australia in September.  With sellouts at all four shows, the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne and Sydney’s Allphones Arena added $7 million to the tour coffers from 49,188 sold tickets.
