The Human Resource Center of Excellence, the largest office building in the state, opened Thursday at Fort Knox.

Designed to serve the soldiers and civilians that will be coming to Fort Knox as a result of the U.S. Defense Department’s Base Realignment and Closure process, the Lt. General Tim J. Maude Building is named for the highest-ranking military officer killed in the Sept. 11 attacks. It has nearly 900,000 square feet and will employee nearly 4,300 soldiers and civilians.

“Every soldier, whether active duty or reserve, will receive services in this building,” said Gov. Steve Beshear in a news release. “This is an important day in the new life of Fort Knox.”

The realignment at Fort Knox is expected to create about 7,800 new military and civilian jobs and relocate 7,700 family members to Kentucky by the end of 2011.

One of the largest relocations was completed this year when the 3rd Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division moved its 3,400 soldiers and their families from Fort Hood, Texas to Fort Knox.

The realignment is expected to increase payroll at Fort Knox by $332 million to more than $1 billion annually, with a 40 percent increase in tax revenues, according to a University of Louisville analysis.
