Ohio's poverty, uninsured rates up; median income drops sharply

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- New estimates released by the Census Bureau today show that the median household income in Ohio dropped 7 percent from 2006-07 to 2008-09, while rates increased for both the number of people living in poverty and those going without health insurance.

Local and more detailed state-level data will be released by the end of the month. The Census Bureau on Thursday released

, but advised using two-year averages for the states.

Also today

Ohio's poverty rate increased from 12.5 percent in 2006-07 to 13.5 percent in 2008-09. The national two-year rate was 13.8 percent in 2008-09.

The percent of Ohioans without health insurance increased from 10.9 percent in 2006-07 to 12.9 percent in 2008-09. The national rate in 2008-09 was 16 percent.

And Ohio's median income was down sharply from $49,811 in 2006-07 to $46,318 in 2008-09. The national two-year median income was $49,945.

The nation's poverty rate increased from 13.2 percent in 2008 to 14.3 percent in 2009. One-in-five children (20.7 percent) were living in poverty last year, the new statistics show.

Overall, an estimated 43.6 million people were living in poverty last year.

. For example, the threshold is $11,161 for a single person under the age of 65, and $17,285 for a family of three.

The percent of people without health insurance increased from 15.4 percent in 2008 to 16.7 percent (50.7 million people) in 2009.

The Census Bureau said median household income of $49,777 was essentially unchanged from 2008.
