Kim Heung-soo added to President

KBS’s upcoming politics-themed drama President has added Kim Heung-soo to its cast, which piques my interest because this guy can be a pretty sexy bastard onscreen (which is the description that came most often to mind when watching romantic-comedy drama Invincible Lee Pyeong-gang, where he played a scheming villain).

It’s fitting, then, that he should play a confident Casanova here, described as free-thinking, frank, and fashionable. His Ki Soo-chan character is a political consultant who takes on the job of campaign manager for a presidential candidate. Though he starts off in the opposition’s camp, he’s scouted to the other side because he’s just that good.

That presidential candidate will be played by veteran actor and sageuk king Choi Su-jong (Dae Jo Young, Comrades), which makes this a reunion for him and Kim Heung-soo six years after they acted together in Emperor of the Sea. Notably, Choi’s real-life wife Ha Hee-ra will act as his onscreen first lady.

President will follow Runaway Plan B, which means that it’ll air directly opposite SBS’s big presidential drama, Daemul, for a few weeks before that drama wraps. Normally I’d say that there ain’t nobody in the K-drama world who could put up a fight against Go Hyun-jung when she’s on a hot streak (and I wouldn’t count on this drama toppling Daemul from its perch), but Choi Su-jong is a pretty formidable challenger in terms of name recognition, experience, and gravitas. While Dameul seems to be heading into makjang territory, I’m very curious to see how President approaches the subject from a different angle in devoting more time to the process of getting the lead into the Blue House.

President’s first episode airs December 8.

Choi SooJong has this strange luck with dramas tho'...he always makes his fellow actors shine, sometimes catapulating them into stardom (ex: Song IlGook).....somehow with him around, the whole cast get tied together in a good performance......so even if the rating doesn't topple DaeMul, I think we can expect a good drama that can be a worthy contender^^~

Can't wait to watch this drama. Definitely the rating will skyrocket after Daemul finish airing.

I am loving the sound of President, I'm expecting it to be heavy-hitting. I'm not sure about the writer, but I feel the PD is talented enough to give us a quality product.
Now the cast is another thing. I'm not sold on any of them. Will just have to keep an open mind about them.

Daemul on the other hand, sigh. LOVELOVELOVE the cast, even the PD and writer post switch are love. Had those two had the project from the very get-go, they would've created something wonderful, but too late now, I guess.
I just don't think they were able to shrug off Oh Jong-rok's bad influence after all, and the baggage of his last minute add-on characters like Lee Soo-kyung's, you can also feel the strain and that seems to be killing the momentum. Saying that it's still a decent watch, just not spectacular.
Oh, and ratings schmatings.

Daemul's a good show, but the "court intrigue" inherently makes the show tough to be consistently emotionally engaging. There's only so many "big speeches" you can do. Doubly so for President if they want to go high-brow with the material . . . and uhh giving the current N-S K situation, don't know how far they can go on a public TV station.

Congressman Kang's the most interesting character. Machiavellian, even sometimes chilling, but not really "villain."

I think the makers are being tentative, playing it safe. Seems there's not much play-space for them to truly re-invigorate the story. Like they're gridlocked.
But you're right about Da Cha, I like how they're using him as the wildcard. But d'oh, not evil enough.
I do wish LSK's character wouldn't hover around him so much and killing his moment everytime she does. What purpose does she serve if she ain't playing super-bitch? Dammit, I want a super-bitch on the show!

I can whinge about it more but the truth is, as soon as I tune in, I'm girlcrushing like crazy over GHJ, there's such an aura about Hyeo-rim that I've not seen in any other role of hers. She's just that amazing. Ideally, I would like her to be a bit more darker and layered whilst she's at it, more Hye-rin. But I'll settle for self-righteous, spirited with a tendency towards being hormonal and cranky.
And Choi Il-hwa is just... magical. *swoon*

Good point about President and being aired by a public broadcaster. Plus, wonder how they'll cover the Gwangju conflict. Hmm.
But really, couldn't they find a better selection of supporting actors? There's a good bunch of idol stars in it, which is plain weird.

I'm not completley sold with daemul, no matter how hard i tried to like it in the beginning. there were some episodes i like, but others i hate. so overall its meh to me, and it bugs me because although i liked go hyun jung in queen seon duk, i find her character hard to like here - i find her a bit false. i actually prefer the second lead.

....

i watched ilp, and that guy is smokin'. i hope this time around he has more of a personality to play around with.

wasn't interested in the plot at all but him being in the drama has totally changed that for me. he was absolutely amazing in emperor of the sea - he shows his emotions fantastically and he has so much onscreen charisma drfgdfghdfjgjdfhdfgdfg. SO EXCITE.
