Ukip supporters have to examine their priorities

AT THE beginning of the General Election campaign in April the result seemed a foregone conclusion.

When the General Election was announced it seemed as if Theresa May would win by a landslide

Theresa May would stroll towards a landslide victory, capitalising on her growing popularity since becoming Prime Minister last summer during the turmoil that followed the EU referendum.

In announcing the election she said that she intended to secure a mandate for the Brexit negotiations.

“For while the country is increasingly united, Westminster remains divided,” she said.

“The opposition parties believe – wrongly – that, because the Government’s majority is so small, our resolve will weaken and they can force us to change course.”

Many also believed that an election would effectively annihilate Labour under such a despised leader as Jeremy Corbyn

But even the staunchest Conservative would agree that the Tory campaign has not gone according to plan, that there have been unforced errors and that there is no room for complacency.

Theresa May: Corbyn doesn’t believe in Britain

We would urge readers (who assumed that a Conservative government with a large majority was a done deal) to remember that nothing is certain.

Every vote counts and everyone who believes that a Labour government would be catastrophic for Britain must get out and vote next Thursday.

It is also vital that those who voted Ukip in the past should think carefully. Ukip came into being to push for a referendum on the EU.

That the Leave movement succeeded is a magnificent triumph. But now Ukip supporters must recognise that the aim is to ensure that Britain quits the EU with the best possible deal.

That can only happen under a Conservative government. The ultimate goal – a return of sovereignty and control of our own borders – is more important than allegiance to a political party.

For all the absurd triumphalism of Labour as it experiences its “surge” it is extremely unlikely that Jeremy Corbyn will form a government no matter how wide his “progressive” alliances.

But nobody who cares about the country’s future can take the risk. That is why this newspaper urges all readers, to get out and vote.

A Grande day after horror

Tomorrow pop star Ariana Grande will perform in a tribute concert for the victims of the Manchester Arena bombing.

In doing this she is making a touching gesture towards the city and towards her many teenage fans.

May it bring happiness and delight out of darkness and destruction.
