Where can I find grants for independent filmmakers?

There are many grant programs listed at the following links. Each one has its own specific criteria and application process. Filmmakers should research each opportunity carefully to ensure that the funder supports the type project for which funding is being sought.

Georgia grants for filmmakers:

Georgia Council for the Arts: GCA offers grants that support projects involving filmmakers; however, there must be a public component. For instance, GCA could support a project that brings students to a film set to teach them about how a movie is made, or a project that includes workshops by the director explaining how the final film was put together.

GCA grants also require that the applicant be a non-profit organization, school, library, college or government entity. Grants cannot be made to individuals or for-profit companies.

For additional information on GCA grants, go to www.gaarts.org/what-we-do/grants.

Some municipalities and state and federal agencies may require permits to shoot at certain locations within their jurisdiction. Permitting for streets, buildings, and parks in the City of Atlanta is done through the Mayor's Office of Entertainment.

You can also contact our county Camera Ready Liaisons or call the appropriate municipality or agency to inquire about rules, restrictions, and permitting for your desired location. Click here for a sample list of municipalities and agencies that require film permits or have posted filming guidelines.

I need to double _________ (fill in the blank). Can I find this in Georgia?

With the exception of expansive deserts or a blustery snowfield, Georgia can stand in for most anywhere. Domestically, we've stood in for New York City, Las Vegas, Chicago, Iowa, Los Angeles, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Florida to name a few. We've also stood in for international cities, historical and futuristic societies, and even other planets! Is there anywhere in Georgia that I can shoot a summer/spring shot with greenery in January?

Absolutely. Savannah and much of Coastal Georgia have live oaks, magnolias, azaleas, and other foliage that remain green all year round.

I need rural locations for my shoot. Can I still base out of Atlanta without driving too far?

Yes, rural locations are plentiful within an hour's drive in any direction from downtown Atlanta. And, if you need mountain scenery, the Appalachian foothills are a little over an hour away.

Macon, Columbus, and Augusta, along with hundreds of other cities and towns throughout Georgia, offer unique and realistic looks that will create a real sense of place and time.

How can I be sure that I am dealing with a reputable talent agency in Georgia?

Georgia does not have a licensing or regulating body for talent agencies, and as a state agency, this office cannot recommend one over another. We have several excellent talent agencies in our area. The lure of celebrity is sometimes overwhelming, however, and people with stars in their eyes can be subject to exploitation. Therefore, you should carefully consider your choices before signing up with a talent agency. The Better Business Bureau of Metropolitan Atlanta offers the following guidelines:

  • Determine if the company actually has jobs available or if it's just a ploy to enroll you in a training course or to sell you photographs of yourself.
  • Contact potential employers to determine if there is a market and what skills are necessary to enter the market.
  • Determine whether the agency has an established reputation with creditable retailers, advertising agencies, and other persons in organizations who would be knowledgeable in the area.
  • Check with the Better Business Bureau of Metropolitan Atlanta for factual information on any specific company about whom you need or desire pertinent data.
  • The State of Georgia Governor's Office of Consumer Affairs may also be able to help with some types of complaints regarding unfair or deceptive activities. The office is not able to assist with contract disputes.
