5 inch 54 caliber Naval Gun Ammunition

The MK64 5 inch 54 caliber naval projectile is the basic round of ammunition for the U.S. Navy's main armament systems. The family of projectiles includes a high explosive version with various fuses, training rounds without warheads and a cargo version or dual purpose improved conventional munition (DPICM).

Although intended for use primarily against naval or other surface targets, this projectile can also be used as an anti-aircraft projectile.

The rounds are of a modern design with a provision for deep intrusion fuses. The forges steel projectiles have a long and streamlined outline, especially the ogive, together with a distinctive boat tail and flat base. The single, wide rotating band is made of copper.

The 5"/54 MK64-2 Projectile Body (MPTS) is a component of the 5"/54 Caliber Blind, Loaded and Plugged (BL&P) MK92-1 Projectile. This round was procured in FY93 under US/Canada competition with Chamberlain Manufacturing/Scranton Division winning the award. They subsequently received two follow-on awards as the single Restricted Specified Base producer. CMC then won a competitive best value award in FY00.
