Emerging as a blue chip in the ad industry recently, actress Park Shin-hye has been appointed as the PR ambassador of manhwa, or Korean comics, and animations. At a ceremony of appointing her as the PR ambassador of the "Seoul International Cartoon and Animation Festival (SICAF)2009' she took a picture with 'Bummy' and 'Tangko', the mascots of the festival on 14th of July. SICAF is the largest festival of animation and cartoon in Asia.
"Started her career as a child actor, she is cute and lively so much so that she looks like a comics character", said the organizing committee in an explanation of why they chose her as a PR ambassador. "We anticipate that she plays a great role to deliver message of hope and dream to aspiring animators and cartoonists who visit the festival".
The organization's decision draws attention because Park frequently appeared on manhwa-based dramas such as "Bichunmu" ("Dance in the Sky") on SBS and miniseries, "Prince Hours", on MBC. Especially the two dramas are meaningful to her, given that she strengthened her status as an actress through them.
The self-proclaimed fan of manhwa and animation admired positive roles of manhwa saying, "manhwa and animation are kind of refreshment of life. They lead those who are tired of everyday life to the world of imagination". "I hope not only manias but also citizens enjoy animated films and make happy memories through this event", she said. "I am a mania of manhwa and animation. I wait for this annual event. I want to see films for manias as much as I can such as 'Fade to black", she smiled with flashed cheeks.
Meanwhile taking a picture with mascots of SICAF 2009, Bummy and Tangko, she entertained staff on the set with her smile comparable to that of a comics character. SICAF 2009 is the largest animation festival in Asia, featuring various exhibition programs. Starting from 22nd July, it runs for 5 days in Coex and Lotte Cinema (Konkuk Univ.), Seoul. In commemoration of the centenary of manhwa, programs on a wide variety such as 'Best Scenes of Manhwa Exhibition', 'Marble Comics Exhibition', 'Fantasy Manhwa Exhibition' are to be provided to meet the needs not only of manias but also children and families in the summer vacation.
This year the festival is conducted on a larger scale than ever before. The organizing committee of SICAF aims to make the festival a venue for entertainment and joy, thereby encouraging more people to enjoy manhwa and animation in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of manhwa.
