Chicago, Missouri & Western (CMNW)

The northern part of this railroad, a spin-off from the Illinois Central Gulf of former Gulf, Mobile & Ohio lines, became Southern Pacific, and is now UP. The southern and western lines became Gateway Western. {Kam Miller}

CM&NW was the reporting marks for the Chicago Missouri & Western. I think this actually stood for; Chicago Missouri & North Western. This was an ICG spinoff road that lasted about a year before becoming Gateway Western. I think the heritage of most of GWWR power was; GP38s Penn Central/Conrail, GP40s were ex Western Pacific. {Dan Bohannon]

This plant was located just north of the EL and east of E65th St in Cleveland.

The company fabricated switch and diamond crossing for railroads. It was serviced by the Erie/EL on the south side of the plant and by the PRR on the north side.

The Whitcome 20 Tonner u refer to in your web page is actually a standard gauge locomotive and it is now painted yellow with a black frame and running gear. There is a series of standard gage tracks on the property for delivery and shippment of rr materials. One of the tracks enters their crane-shed for unloading/loading. the Whitcomb is kept inside most of the time. However, even though it is in running condition (4/15/01), the superstructure is in poor physical condition. The company dba Cleveland Track Material, Inc. since the early 90's. - Buell, Larry A - 22 Oct 2001

Crab Orchard & Egyptian (COER)

The Crab Orchard & Egyptian Railroad is a somewhat unique shortline railroad. The CO&E is known for being the last common carrier railroad in the United States to use steam locomotives EXCLUSIVELY to haul revenue freight. (This was done from October 18, 1977 until September 8, 1986, utilizing two locomotives). The CO&E started out using a lightly used branch of the Illinois Central out of Carbondale, Illinois to Marion, Illinois.

The CO&E started out as a tourist operation May 29, 1973, using a 2-4-2T (former CIPS #5) and several passenger cars, which were old Illinois Central commuter trailer cars. By 1975, the CO&E had purchased a much larger locomotive, a 2-8-0 (former Roberval & Saguenay #17). This locomotive wasn't used in tourist service, but was a seed planted for the future.

Things made a turn for the worst June 13, 1977, when the old IC depot the CO&E was using burned to the ground, taking with it two of the CO&E's 6 passenger cars. This tragedy did away with the tourist service by October, 1978, but this turn for the worst turned out to be a second chance at running a railroad as common carrier. The first freight train hauled behind a steam locomotive on the CO&E was October 18, 1977.

The CO&E's freight service was growing, adding piggyback service December, 1978, with 200 flatcars and 600 trailers. May 10, 1979 saw the first test run of the 2-8-0, which had went through a four year overhaul and became the primary motive power of the CO&E in July, 1979.

The CO&E added several different freight cars to its roster over the next few years, including coal hoppers, covered hoppers and boxcars. All freight cars for the CO&E were lettered COER. None of them are on the current roster of the CO&E today.

Nineteen-Eighty-Six was a year that saw the end of an era for American Railroading. The drypipe inside the boiler of 2-8-0 #17 collapsed while switching coal hoppers on September 8, 1986. The eventual replacement of the 2-8-0 had already been planned with two ex-Missouri Pacific Sw1200s, which were already on the property when the drypipe let go.

Operations today are diesel powered. The CO&E has two separate lines, both former ICG branch lines. One line, the original line is located at Marion, Illinois with the headquarters of the railroad. The other line is in Herrin, Illinois.

As for the steam power the CO&E once had, both still exist. 2-4-2T #5 was rebuilt by the CO&E into ao conventional loocmotive with tender over the winter of 1973-74 and was sold in 1985 and currently resides in Jackson, MO on the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern railroad, a tourist operation. The StLIM&S has extensively rebuilt the 5 into a somewhat different locomotive than what she was with the CO&E. This engine is currently being rebuilt for service.

The 2-8-0 #17, was sold in early 1987 and currently resides on the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad in Boone, Iowa as a static display in very sad shape, but still lettered for her former owner.

The CO&E once had a 35 ton Davenport switcher. It has also been preserved back in her namesake hometown: Rosiclare, Illinois, proudly displayed as COER #1. - Edward Bridges

It appears to be an EMD Model 40 industrial diesel. These were built in the 1940's and had two diesel engines (Caterpillars, as I recall). I'm not sure if both axles had traction motors or if it was just one. There are now just two left in the US; the one pictured on your site and one at a quarry in Chicago. The one in Chicago has been arranged for movement to the Hoosier Valley RR Museum in North Judson, IN.
