3M Co. announced Friday that it will build another technology innovation center in China, this time focusing on the western region of Chengdu.
The plan, for which costs were not disclosed, will give Maplewood-based 3M a new vehicle to show off its technology and problem-solving capabilities to prospective clients in one of the fastest growing cities in western China.
3M started doing business in China in 1984 and has since invested more than $1 billion there. 3M China currently has 11 sites and 8,000 employees.
While in China last week, 3M CEO Inge Thulin and 3M Greater China Area Vice President Jim McSheffrey noted 3M's philosophy of making products "in China for China." The Chengdu center fits right into that.
"As a part of our strategic deployment, the regional headquarters and a technical center will solidify our investment in Chengdu and drive strong regional growth," McSheffrey said." 'China for China' further drives successful localization and represents the long-lasting commitment of 3M to the China market."
