A consumer electronics giant
As a global leader in consumer electronics, Sony is well known for manufacturing various products, including televisions, digital cameras, smartphones, and hearables. However, the company is most associated with the widely popular line of home video game consoles under the gaming brand PlayStation. Sony registers three of its products in the top five video game consoles sold all-time, with Nintendo’s DS, Xbox, and Game Boy devices making up the rest. In 2022, Sony sold almost 14 million Play Station 5 worldwide, following Nintendo, which sold over 19 million Nintendo Switch the same year.More than just game consoles
Alongside the manufacturing and sales of professional and consumer electronic devices, the Sony enterprise comprises other segments. On the one hand, Sony Entertainment Inc., founded in 2012, focuses on music, television, and motion pictures. On the other hand, Sony semiconductor solution is in charge of the imaging and sensing solutions segment, producing a wide range of semiconductors.Sony Mobility
In 2020, Sony first announced its intention to engage in the electric vehicle (EV) market with a fully electric concept car- Vision S-01. Featuring the Sony Vision-S platform, this 4-seat sedan vehicle outfits 33 sensors – to achieve self-driving and safety measures – as well as a Sony panoramic screen and speakers. In 2022, Sony’s CEO Kenchiro Yoshida announced the commercial launch of Sony’s second EV, the Vision-02, a 7-seat SUV that features 40 sensors, home entertainment technologies, and 5G connectivity. This announcement coincided with the creation of Sony Mobility Inc., a new company that will focus on electric cars. This development forms part of a wider movement from big tech companies and non-traditional car makers, which either as startups or established companies, aim at entering the EV market. Here Sony is competing against the likes of Apple, Amazon, Alibaba, and Baidu.
