FILM-maker Danny Boyle, rock band Elbow and gold medal-winning paralympic athlete Zoe Robinson are to receive a top civic honour next month.

They will each receive the Freedom of the Borough of Bury at a ceremony at the Town Hall on May 11.

A special meeting of Bury Council will confer the status on the town’s famous high achievers.

Zoe, aged 19, who lives in Lowercroft and is a former pupil at Radcliffe Riverside, will be recognised for her outstanding achievement in winning a team gold medal in boccia at the Beijing Paralympic Games 2008.

Radcliffe-born Danny will be recognised for his outstanding achievements in directing the Oscar-winning film, Slumdog Millionaire.

Each member of Bury band Elbow — Craig Potter, Mark Potter, Pete Turner, Richard Jupp and lead singer Guy Garvey — are getting the award in recognition of the group’s collective achievements as winners of a Brit Award, a Mercury Prize and an NME Award.

They will all receive the honour from Bury mayor, Councillor Peter Ashworth.

Mark Sanders, Bury Council chief executive, said: “We are really proud of all of these individuals’ outstanding achievements in their respective professions and by granting them freedom of the borough we want to acknowledge their hard work, determination and commitment and this is the council’s way of congratulating them all on their successes.”
