Milbury resigns as Islanders senior VP

UNIONDALE, N.Y., May 29 (UPI) -- Mike Milbury resigned Tuesday as senior vice president of sports properties for the New York Islanders Tuesday.

The latest move came a little more than a year after he resigned as the Islanders' general manager. Milbury, who spent 12 years with the Islanders, will continue as adviser to team owner Charles Wang.

"Mike played a major role in getting the Islanders back to the Stanley Cup playoffs three years in a row," Wang said. "It was Mike who made the aggressive moves that put the Islanders back on the NHL map."

Milbury originally was hired as the Islanders' head coach July 5, 1995, and took over general manager duties Dec. 12, 1995. He resigned as head coach after 46 games of the 1996-97 season, but remained as the team's GM until January 2006.
