A resupply helicopter lands with food and mail and other supplies. In the month-long Operation El Paso, over 700 Viet Cong have been killed. The next day, the crews hold an APC race for the 4th of July, as they wait for the infantry. APC "Charlie Chan" wins. The infantry appear and board the APCs. The column of APCs move through the jungle. A Viet Cong appears and surrenders. Back at camp. the 1st Division APC crews are read a letter of commendation for their performance in Operation El Paso.
PLEI ME - DAK TO - QUI NHON - The busiest Army air field in Vietnam is at Qui Nhon. Vietnamese civilians are being trained here in some areas of flight control operations. Another Army air field is at Dak To. Flight control operations here are performed in a tower/flight control van. The van is portable. Aircraft can land here in all types of weather because of the radar. The 3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry is taking part in Operation Waikiki and the field at Plei Me supports its helicopters. Shots of soldier in the field using backpack radio flight control equipment.
CAM RAHN BAY - July 4, 1966 is no holiday for the men of the 476th Engineer port construction company. They are repairing a pier. A diesel hammer is shown driving a pylon.
AN KHE - the Camp Radcliffe meteorological men of the 1st Air Cavalry blow up weather baloons. THe balloons are filled with hydrogen gas because helium isn't available here. Weather instrumets are sent up with the balloon and a radio direction finder is used to find the balloon. The mobile meteorological center creates a report, which gets sent to area artillery units so they can fire accurately.
AN KHE - Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts here are being sponsored by American Army civil affairs units. The kids, in scout uniforms, set up tents to take part in an overnight camp out. New scouts take an Oath and receive a beret. Some local shoeshine boys have been invited and they take part in games and go swimming. The scouts are helping to restore a Vietnamese monument to those Vietnamese from North Vietnam who have escaped southward and joined the South Vietnamese Army.
TAN SON NHUT - On June 29, 1966 there was a ceremony William O. Wooldridge's departure. He is going to Washington DC to become the first Sergeant Major of the Army. He is congratulated by his fellow soldiers and presented with a plaque memorializing his service with the 1st Infantry Division.
ARNHEM, HOLLAND - crowds gather to watch the NATO taptoe. This performance on July 27, 1966 includes bands and a motorcycle parade. The bands are shown (and heard) performing.
