BOSTON — The University of Maine will be returning for its second men’s hockey game at Fenway Park on Saturday, Jan. 11 when it takes part in Frozen Fenway 2014.

The game is part of a two-week series of hockey and ice skating events, including two Division I men’s college hockey doubleheaders, and two free public skating days for City of Boston residents, announced by the city, Hockey East and Fenway Sports Management in a press release Thursday.

Maine will play Boston University at Fenway Park as part of a doubleheader as UMass Lowell will take on Northeastern in the first game. On Jan. 4, Merrimack will play Providence, followed by new Hockey East member Notre Dame against Boston College.

“After the success of the Winter Classic in 2010 and the Frozen Fenway college games in 2012, hockey and skating are fast becoming winter traditions at Fenway Park,” said FSM President Sam Kennedy. “We welcome back Hockey East and, along with [Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino], look forward to once again having our beloved ballpark be host to college games, high school games, and to welcome various communities throughout New England to Fenway Park this winter.”

Maine played its first game at Fenway Park in January 2012 when it defeated New Hampshire 5-4 after Brian Flynn scored just 1:29 into overtime in front of 38,456 fans.

Game times and ticket information for the two doubleheaders will be announced in the coming months.

When Maine plays at Fenway it will be under a new head coach as the school fired Tim Whitehead on April 9 after 12 years on the job. A search is currently underway to find his replacement.

Maine and Boston University have met 119 times in history with the Terriers holding a 58-48-13 lead in the all-time series. The two teams first met during the 1924 season in a game played on an outdoor rink next to the Stillwater River in Orono. Maine has won the last six games played on neutral ice. BU will also have a new coach for next season, as alum David Quinn was hired on March 26 to replace longtime coach Jack Parker, who resigned at the end of the 2012-13 season.

Quinn is a former associate head coach at BU and was an assistant coach for the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche.
