Second Line Powers Brown Men's Hockey Past Princeton, 3-2

HANOVER, NH – The Brown men's hockey team (1-1-0, 0-0-0) won its first game of the season, 3-2 over Princeton (0-1-1, 0-0-0), and evened its record at 1-1 in game three of the Ivy Shootout, hosted by Dartmouth. The result counts as a non-league contest for both teams though it does not count in ECAC Hockey or Ivy standings.

Brown came out aggressive, outshooting Princeton, 8-4 in the first five minutes and grabbing a 1-0 lead just 1:03 into the game. After attempts by seniors Bobby Farnham (North Andover, MA) and Jeff Buvinow (Turnersville, NJ) were saved and blocked, respectively, freshman Massimo Lamacchia (Maple, ONT) put one past Mike Condon for his first career goal and a 1-0 Bears' lead. Freshman Ryan Jacobson (Greenwood Village, CO) earned his first career point with an assist on the goal, while sophomore Garnet Hathaway (Kennebunkport, ME) also assisted.

The rest of the period was relatively quiet, as Lamacchia's goal was the only score of the frame and neither team was whistled for any penalties. Princeton finished with an 11-7 advantage in shots for the period.

For as quiet as the last 19 minutes of the first period were, the first four minutes of the second period made up for it, as the team combined for two penalties and three special teams goals.

Princeton would tie the game at the 1:12 mark when Michael Sdao beat senior Mike Clemente (Great Falls, VA) on a Tigers' power play.

However, the Bears would regain the lead just 1:15 later. With a delayed penalty call coming up on Princeton's Tom Kroshus, Clemente headed for the bench in favor of the extra attacker. Just seven seconds after Clemente left the ice, Hathaway tallied his first of the year with assists going to seniors Mike Wolff (Walpole, MA) and Jack Maclellan (Calgary, ALB), as Brown held a 2-1 lead just 2:27 into the second period.

Then, with Kroshus in the penalty box for the tripping call, Jacobson increased the lead to 3-1 with just seven seconds left on the man-advantage. Hathaway and Lamacchia assisted, as all three would finish the afternoon with multi-point games.

Princeton, which outshot Brown, 14-11, in the second, continued to dominate in the shot category through the third, 14-8. However, after allowing the Tigers' second goal at 1:11 of the final period, Clemente stopped 11 consecutive shots, five of which came in the final minute of play and with Princeton on a power play, as Brown held on for the win.

In all, Princeton outshot Brown, 39-26, as Clemente finished with 37 saves. Brown was 1-3 on the man advantage, while the Tigers were 1-4.

Brown returns to action next weekend when it hosts Colgate and Cornell in its ECAC Hockey opening weekend. Both games begin at 7:00 at Meehan Auditorium.
