2022, Neuroscience and Biobehavioral ReviewsCitation Excerpt :As depicted in Fig. 5, these regions differ in their afferent pathways and cortical targets. Tactile events perceived on the anterior two-thirds of the tongue are transmitted to their cortical targets (bilateral areas 3a, 3b, 1 and 2 of the ventral primary somatosensory cortex, Geyer et al., 1999) through the trigeminal ganglion, the brainstem and the thalamus (for a review see Shibukawa, 2009). By contrast, stimuli perceived in posterior tongue regions, in the tongue root and deeply within the lingual structure are sent to their cortical targets only contralateral to the stimulation site, through the medulla (see Fig. 5 for further details on second order neurons of cranial nerves IX, X and XII) and the thalamus.
