Abstract
This introductory chapter first discusses textual issues, focusing on the compositional history, date, and authorship of the Arthaśāstra (AŚ). It then investigates the content of the AŚ under three broad headings: how a king should govern, enhance economic activities, and foster relations with neighboring states in such a way as to enhance his own power and wealth. The final section deals with the reception and later history of the AŚ.
