This paper synthesizes and discusses the current knowledge base surrounding the multi-dimensional influence of stress on both physical and mental health. The authors consider the prevalence and demographics of stress in the United States, as well as the relationship of stress disorders to other health conditions, functional impairment, accidents, and to occupational injuries and illness. Recommendations are discussed, highlighting the need for modifications to organizational culture and public health policy.
