This November, London Transport Museum will open the doors to a brand new gallery.
Called London by Design, the new space will explore how London's transport has become one of the world's most enduring examples of successful brand identity and a world leader in transport design.
The objects on display will reveal the reciprocal interplay between the past and the present when it comes to our city's design heritage.
The gallery showcases never-before seen items linked to London's world-famous transport network and its iconic design heritage, from the 'Golden Era' of poster design right through to the present day and beyond.
From the establishment of the iconic red, blue and white ‘bullseye’ roundel signage, to the instantly recognisable Underground map and the emergence of Tube stations as we know them today, London by Design celebrates key moments and important milestones in London’s transport design heritage. The gallery also shows how British art and design have become deeply and inextricably bound with London’s transport network as well as other major transport projects, and how this might continue in the future.
You can also discover the stories behind some of the early pioneers of transport design including Frank Pick, Harry Beck, Edward Johnston and Charles Holden, as well as exploring exciting future developments in the capital's transport system.
London By Design opens at London Transport Museum on 6 November. Tickets £16 for adults; concessions, £13.50; children under 18 go free. Adult tickets allow unlimited daytime visits to the museum galleries and temporary exhibitions. Visit ltmuseum.co.uk for more information.
