District of Columbia Population History

December 2023 update.

The District’s population rose to 678,972, still below 2020’s 689,548.

January 2023 update.

The District’s population saw a small uptick to an estimated 671,803 for 2022 from 2021’s 668,791. This is slightly below the 2015 figure.

By 2020 the District of Columbia’s population growth over the past decade had reversed itself, dropping by 16,204 people, a 2.3% decline–dropping the District’s population below its 2017 point. In 2019, D.C.’s population increase had slowed dramatically, climbing by just 3,294 (under .5%) to 705,749 as of July 2019, a slowing trend begin in 2018. D.C.’s population had been growing since 2000, when it reversed a 50-year decline.

2018 United States Census update:
D.C. population surpasses 700,000. D.C.’s population is now 702,455 as of July 2018. This 1% increase represents a substantial slowing, which has averaged almost 2% (2011-2017–see below).
