Turkish Netflix users were concerned about a marketing stunt seemingly delivered by Black Mirror to inboxes (Picture: Netflix)

Turkish Netflix fans were left alarmed after they received a ‘frightening’ message in the middle of the night promoting Black Mirror.

Black Mirror takes a dystopian look at new media and technology and the implications technological advances could possibly have on society – but for Turkish Netflix users, that premise seemed momentarily real.

According to English language paper Daily Sabah, on Saturday night Netflix users in the country – of which runs in the shadow of state controlled Andalou News Agency  – complained when they received a direct message into their user accounts.

The message reportedly read: ‘We know what you’re up to. Watch and see what we will do,’ seemingly making reference to an earlier Black Mirror episode, The Waldo Moment.

As Gizmodo reported, other Turkish news outlets have reported the same story with Netflix users flocking on to Ekşi Sözlük, a Turkish version of Reddit.

But some people have reacted angrily against the message, considering the tensions that are playing out in the country after the failed coup against President Erdogan in 2016 brought the country under strict Marshall law.

Several users have stated they are prepared to report the messages to legal authorities since the message landed in their inboxes.

Other Netflix users outside of the country have also been quick to criticise the streaming service for advertising ‘under the guide of something more sinister’.

‘Shitty move in Turkey @netflix especially with the current politics there! Happy now that ppl are talking about it? Got what you wanted?

‘Alluding to some all-powerful creepy surveillance for an advertising stunt is sickening at any time. Doing it to people in Turkey in current circumstances crosses into actually dangerous. Netflix Freaks Out Users with Creepy Black Mirror Marketing Stunt,’ wrote another user.

Meanwhile, Black Mirror users in the UK were treated to some less dystopian marketing in the form of a recap advert entitled ‘Happy New Year’.

They posted a recap video to Youtube, with the description: ‘There’s only one way to say goodbye to 2017. Six new Black Mirror stories, now streaming.’
