Stephen Maguire has won the Six-red World Championship for a second time after beating John Higgins 8-6 in the final in Bangkok.

The all-Scottish final was an entertaining, see-saw affair which saw Maguire take a 3-0 lead, only for Higgins to win the next four to take a lead of his own.

It was then three on the spin for Maguire again, before the Wizard of Wishaw leveled things up at 6-6, thanks to a break of 58 in the 12th.

The match was on a knife-edge, but it was the former champion who got over the line and pick up the fantastic top prize of £106,000 (4m Baht).

‘It feels good, I was very lucky,’ said Maguire. ‘I’d like to thank the sponsor and promoter for putting on the tournament.

‘All of the boys enjoy this, everyone loves coming out to Thailand.’

Maguire won the tournament back in 2014 and reached the semi-final in 2016 in an event that he loves to play in and has proved very profitable.

It has been a great start to the season, financially, for the Scot who also won the World Cup alongside Higgins for Scotland, pocketing $100,000 (£81,000) for that success.

The World Cup and the Six-red tournament are non-ranking events, as is the upcoming Shanghai Masters which Maguire goes into in fine fettle after his Bangkok victory.

Higgins had to settle for the runner-up cheque of £34,000 as his search for a first Six-red title continues.

The Shanghai Masters gets underway on Monday, with the event seeing the first appearance of Ronnie O’Sullivan this season and a return to action of world champion Judd Trump.
