2019 Census Results Released

The latest census data released today by The City of Calgary shows Calgary’s population at 1,285,711 up 18,367 from the previous year. This is an increase of 1.45 per cent.

“Calgary is experiencing stable net migration in spite of a slower pace of economic growth,” said city economist and regulatory lead Oyin Shyllon. “As a result Calgary is expected to experience continued but modest population growth over the next five years.”

In 2019 The City of Calgary continued to utilize the census online as well as tablet computers for door-to-door collection. This year people in 204,229 households submitted their census data through the self-serve online system compared to 188,633 households in 2018, a three per cent increase of use. Through the use of electronic data collection, information is submitted in a secure manner after collection.

“What the 2019 Civic Census tells us is that Calgary is growing even as we continue our economic recovery. We see where and how housing growth is taking place, giving us insight into how we need to plan our infrastructure investments. We are able to anticipate and plan for the effects an aging population is going to have on how the City operates,” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “Building a city that focuses on quality of life requires good data and we’ll continue to make decisions based on the numbers for the benefit of all current and future Calgarians.”
