Haruf-e-Tana is an adaptation of the Thaana script for Urdu created by Punya Pranava Pasumarty. The name means "letters of Thaana", and is a combination of "Haruf-e-Tahaji", which refers to the Urdu abjad, and "Thaana".
This adapted script was created by Punya Pranava Pasumarty upon realizing that the Thaana script is better suited to write Urdu than the Arabic script is. The current Arabic-based Urdu abjad has too many instances where multiple letters, which have distinct sounds in Arabic, have identical sounds in Urdu; yet they are treated as different letters. This is not the case if Thaana is used for Urdu. Also, the Arabic-based script does not give much importance to vocalization whilst the Urdu language needs to represent vowels faithfully to avoid confusion because of its connection to Sanskrit and other Indian languages. Thaana does a better job at representing vowel marks than the current Arabic-based Urdu abjad does.
There are a few differences between the standard Thaana, used for Dhivehi, and ‘Haruf-e-Tana’, suited for the Urdu language. Haruf-e-Tanauses the 24 standard letters of Thaana as well as 4 extra letters for variant sounds. These extra letters are basically regular letters with a dot added to indicate a variant pronunciation. Also, while Haruf-e-Tana is based on Thaana, the sequence of letters is similar to that of the Urdu abjad, so as to be more logically ordered than the rather arbitrary sequence of the Thaana letters in Dhivehi.
