As streaming services continue to blur the lines between being just a playlist feed and offering a broader mix of audio services, Spotify has launched the closest thing to a customized broadcast station.
“Your Daily Drive” is described as “a new Spotify playlist that combines the very best of news talk shows, including the relevancy and personality of the hosts, with the best of audio streaming (on demand, personalized playing and discovery). It combines music you love with relevant, timely world updates from reputable sources – all put together in a seamless and unified listening experience.”
The station will include:
- Short-form podcast news updates from Wall Street Journal, NPR, and PRI
- A mix of your favorite songs and artists interspersed with tracks you’ve yet to discover
- Updates throughout the day to keep both the music and news fresh
- An escape from toggling between multiple stations to avoid music that isn’t quite your speed
The Your Daily Drive feature is in the Your Library section under “Made For You”.
INSTANT INSIGHT: Anyone in denial of streaming taking listeners away because radio offers something unique that streaming cannot needs to get over themselves quickly. If there’s money to be made for a streaming service to add hosts with content that is customized for the listener they’ll do so. Make your station stand out in a way that an algorithm cannot before it is too late, because it already might be.

It would be interesting to see how this would work. I’d listen to it, even if I’m not in the car.
I’m a bit surprised that there weren’t more news partners/providers at launch–especially if (as at least one other article specifies) the main programs being carried are NPR News Now, the WSJ Minute Briefing, and The Daily, none of which is new. (That said, I’m not sure how PRI is being represented here.)
