Cholendra Shumsher JB Rana confirmed as Chief Justice

KATHMANDU: Cholendra Shumsher JB Rana has been confirmed as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

The Parliamentary Hearing Committee (PHC) meeting held today unanimously endorsed Rana as head of the judicial system of the country.

Oath of office will be administered to the new Chief Justice by the President on Wednesday.

A meeting of the Constitutional Council held at Singha Durbar in Kathmandu on December 13 had recommended Rana for the post of Chief Justice at the apex court.

The Judicial Council had previously forwarded names of former acting CJ Deepak Raj Joshee and Rana to the Constitutional Council.

Earlier, Rana had faced a tough time at the PHC where he was grilled on a number of issues, including some of the controversial verdicts he gave while he served as a judge in the courts.

He will be the 28th Chief Justice of the country and will remain in office for three years.
