Rohit Sharma first batsman to hit five centuries in a World Cup

The Indian opener etched his name in the history books by becoming the first batsman to hit five centuries in a single edition of the World Cup. Rohit Sharma broke former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara's record for the most number of centuries. Sangakkara made four consecutive tons in the last edition of the showpiece event in 2015.

NEW DELHI: There is no stopping Rohit Sharma in this World Cup. The Indian opener etched his name in the history books by becoming the first batsman to hit five centuries in a single edition of the World Cup.

The 32-year-old batsman achieved the milestone in India's final league match against Sri Lanka at the Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds on Saturday.

Rohit broke former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara's record for the most number of centuries. Sangakkara made four consecutive tons in the last edition of the showpiece event in 2015.
Rohit's third hundred in a row also tied him with Sachin Tendulkar for the record of six overall at World Cups.
Rohit was dismissed by Kasun Rajitha for 103 in the 31st over. He hammered 14 fours and two sixes during his 92-ball stay at the crease. The right-handed batsman recorded centuries against South Africa (122*), Pakistan (140), England (102) and Bangladesh (104).
During the course of his 27th ODI ton, Rohit also went past Shakib Al Hasan's tally of 606 runs in eight innings when he reached 63 with India chasing 265 for victory.
The leading scorer in the ongoing World Cup, Rohit (647) also became the second Indian after Sachin to amass over 600 runs in a single edition of the showpiece event. Sachin (673) held the record of scoring maximum runs in 2003.
