Days of Our Lives: Entire Cast Released From Contract — Is the End Nigh?

TVLine has learned exclusively that the producers of Days of Our Lives have released the entire cast from their contracts, with the venerable soap set to go on an indefinite hiatus at month’s end. While the NBC sudser has not been cancelled, the unprecedented — and decidedly ominous — move comes at a precarious time for ratings-challenged Days and the vanishing soap genre as a whole. It also comes as Sony Pictures Television and NBC are in negotiations to renew series.
Reps for NBC and Sony declined to comment for this story. A Sony source, meanwhile, tells TVLine that the studio is not involved in the contract negotiations with the cast. “The actor deals are through Corday Productions,” explains the insider, referring to Days‘ production company. A spokesperson for Corday Productions, meanwhile, did not reply to TVLine’s request for a comment.
An insider cautions that because Days shoots eight months in advance, the show will have enough episodes in the can when it stops production at the end of November to last through Summer 2020. If NBC does renew Days, production is expected to resume in March. But by releasing the contracted cast members from from their commitment to the show, producers have no guarantee who — if anyone — will return.
“It’s actually a shrewd — if cynical — business move,” sniffs one insider. “If Days gets picked up, [Corday] can offer the actors new contacts at a reduced rate and with a ‘take-it-or-leave’ it attitude. Worst case scenario, they lose half their cast. Best case scenario [for Corday], everyone agrees to return at a lower salary.”
Despite the gloomy turn of events, a source tells TVLine, “All indications are that NBC would like to keep the show going.”
The news comes as Days is shaking things up on-screen. This week, the soap is fast-forwarding the narrative by one year. “This is a great way to reset things in Salem,” executive producer Ken Corday told TVInsider.com of the time jump. “It will be a catalyst for many more [changes] to follow.”
End the soap operas. Bring back Network weekday game shows.
But in the end, NBC will add another hour of Today.

I Agree Jai-lee. My favorite soap “One Life to Live” was canceled in 2011, so I started tuning in to “Days of Our Lives”. If DOOL disappears, there will be no soap I will watch. Its the only good one left!

Game shows are not for me. I find that they are mostly infomercials. I want to escape and go to my soap opera. I have watched soaps many years. I have watched Days Of Our Lives since 1970 and I am heavily invested with the characters and storylines. Please don’t end it!

This is not NBC, Corady Productions controls the actors contracts (not NBC or Sony). As the story states, NBC wants to continue the soap.

My grandma was a stay-home-mom and she always watched soaps and talk shows. She had tv all day with CBS soaps and she would make lunch, then Judge Judy and make dinner, gameshows at night, then tv shows. My mom was Days when I was a kid and when I grew up, she worked. I never liked soaps, but a friend did. For those who invested time into soaps, I can see where it would be it would be hard to let go.

I feel for you. I do. When I was a Senior in College I got hooked on some soap opera and watched it faithfully. One afternoon I was sitting there immersed in the story when it hit me, “What the hell am I doing? I could be studying!” I turned off the TV and got on with my life. You can too. Good luck.

Several years ago I discovered Korean drama miniseries, which IMHO are much better than anything from Hollywood. Their miniseries are like long movies, and put you into an interesting world with better stories, and better actors and actresses. There are both modern and historical ones which are excellent. They range from 16 to over 70 episodes. While there are hundreds of them, a few are available on Netflix. For a taste, try This is my Love or Something in the Rain. If you can do subtitles, you won’t regret it.

Just when Steve was coming back to the show. Whose brilliant idea was this “Corday’s”, so he could cut the budget some more. It’s a terrible to do that to the whole cast.Will they all want to come back in March and sign for less money. That’s a slap in there faces.

Me too! My best friend & I watched it every day since the early 70’s. When she died of cancer I continued to watch it as it made me feel like she was still here. I do not watch much television but I have a Cpap and turn “DOOL” on until I get sleepy to drown out the machine noise. It takes out the stress of the day to look at someone else’s struggles rather than your own. Like putting it in a box before going to sleep. It’s my one show I can count on when I’m sick in bed to get my mind off of how I feel because someone else has bigger problems to solve. A game show definitely does not do that for me. I really hope they don’t let it go & it’s just part of this contract shuffle.

I totally agree with you. I have watched Days of Our Lives for as long as I can remember also. If they took it off there wouldn’t be anything decent in my eyes to watch during the day. I have a lot invested in these characters; I grew up with them. PLEASE don’t take this show off!!!

My Mom used to watch soaps and the game shows. Sadly, the game shows would now be too glitzy and contrived. I doubt soaps have changed much….which is a good thing.
I have been an avid Days fan for many years, it’s the only soap I watch. I grew up with it and as I put it best it’s the only drama I enjoy in life. Telling people to get a life is ignorant, fast forwarding the show one year is ignorant if you are letting it go then please go out with the same dedication you’ve shown through the years and please know you are breaking alot of fans hearts. I loved the game shows, and miss them a lot. I don’t want to pay extra to get the game show channel, either.
Nobody wants to watch game shows. There are too many game shows airing already. Keep soap opera shows on the air. Stop cutting the cast members salaries and stop mistreating them. They are working hard.
This isn’t even totally true, they have only been let go because they have taped so far ahead they can all take breaks and work on other stuff for a few months before they start recording again.
The problem isn’t the soap operas, it’s the talk shows. When game shows aired during the daytime, soaps were big. It’s the talk shows that replaced the game shows.
But please make the game shows better than the loser 25 words or less or whatever it is called. I could barely sit through first round of bidding before losing interest. Snore!

I remember as a kid, staying home from school ( on the rare occasion my mom believed I was sick) and her watching her soaps. Lord help you if you uttered a word during As the World Turns, Guiding Light and Secret Storm (I think that was the name). Later, Dark Shadows was produced..and coincided right when we kids were coming home from school. I never watched any of them but the memories of being in the living room, with her watching our 27″black and white tv, will be with me forever. I hope the viewing audience will let the network know of their displeasure by contacting the sponsors. Maybe, logical heads will prevail.

I’m 53. My mom used to watch those soaps in the 70’s. She used to tell me HER mom listened to them back in the days when they were on RADIO!!! It’s a multi-generational tradition! :-D

Got into the show when I started working from home and every so often I tune back in to see what’s going on when I am off work. It’s so cheesy but I love it. Hope they don’t cancel it. How many more chat shows or hours of the Today show can NBC have before it goes beyond ridiculous?
The fast-forward by a year strategy is interesting for this viewer who has been watching this soap since Mickey thought his name was Marty. I’d like to see it renewed just so the actors have work but as clever as the writing is, they are just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. I’ll miss ya, Jack.

Hopefully, they at least try to bring the cast back to try to somewhat wrap storylines if a long term deal cannot be reached. I assume this gives them the opportunity to offer the show to nbc at a lower cost. I wonder if the upcoming Peacock factors in at all?

This situation with Days and Corday reeks of a Prospect Park-type deal.
If you can find British soaps, they do really well in the ratings and are fun. There’s Eastenders and Hollyoaks which is on Hulu. I’ve read that Young and the Restless does well in the ratings and Bold and the Beautiful too but I’m not sure. I watch GH on occasion but can’t recommend that one now, it’s awful!
B&B is still on the air strictly because of it’s overseas ratings. It does VERY WELL abroad.

I grew up watching this show in the 90s and I still tune in and watch what’s happening to my favorite characters. I don’t want the show to end, but it won’t be the same without the cast. If they can’t afford to pay the cast a decent wage because of pay cuts then maybe it’s time to end it. I just wish they’d renew it one last time so the writers and producers can plan for it and provide a decent ending to the stories they’ve been creating all these years.
This is so sad. 54 years is an incredible run. However, watch it (potentially) go is gonna be tough. I love daytime soaps. I feel like they’ve played such an important role in TV history. The fact that there might only be 3 remaining soon is heartbreaking.

Interesting. I’ve always thought filming so far in advance was horrible since doing so made it impossible for them to “fix” story lines what just weren’t working. I think the one year time jump is a perfect way to remedy some of that. Yesterday’s episode, the first after the jump, was fantastic.
This is disturbing news. Daytime drama is a valuable worthwhile and cherished broadcast genre and tradition. Broadcast seems destined to ruin itself in an era of streaming by dismantling the things that make it special. All soaps have been challenged since 2000, and DAYS has had to scramble. I am not sure how many reboots a soap needs in a decade, but DAYS has recognized its strengths and been innovative each time. I see familiar actors and characters. I am surprised by turns, such as this new fast-forward angle. I am weary of endless talk and recycled guests. I do not want another hour of TODAY or a panel of women around a table talking or a courtroom show. no one else is doing daytime drama. Not cable, not streaming. Digital gives us 6 or 10 episodes in a year. Again, broadcast, do what you do best and differently.
The fast forward angle is ok but not like Sara being pregnant and the following day she’s got like a 3 yr old daughter she skipped the whole pregnancy not to mention the hospital stay (even tho the hospital is so easy to do they all work there lol rolls eyes 🙄🤪

Gorl please. Get over yourself. Studies have shown that the younger generation is still watching at least 1.5 hours of network television a day. Yes that is about 30 mins than the average but not a dramatic difference. Plus they aren’t watching much more online TV than the typical internet user per day. They’re averaging 1 hour 21 minutes per day in 2019 compared to the global average of 1 hour and 16 minutes. Again, not a dramatic difference. It may be 2019 but network television isn’t dead yet, or cable, or daytime (yet). DVRs are still a thing in case you haven’t noticed. It’s this square thing that lets you record shows when you can’t watch them live. I’d say it’s similar to a VCR but I don’t want to confuse you.

Please don’t cancel Days. I started watching it in high school with my mother. However, it does seem that the quality of the writing and acting isn’t as good as it used to be.
Me also, I started watching days with my Mother before I was a teen. I was still watching when I became a Mother. My daughters grew up coming home during the school year to get all the scoop on that days episode, summer vacation was their time, no matter what was going on with their friends they always were home in time to catch every episode. Now I have a grand daughter please don’t cancel a family tradition!
I started watching DAYS about the time Bo and Hope were introduced and Roman and Marlena first married. I haven’t followed any soaps regularly since ANOTHER WORLD went off the air (though I did follow Jake and Vicky to AS THE WORLD TURNS), but I do tune in to DAYS every now and then.
The six- to eight-month tape to air lag time is ridiculous as are a lot of the stories on DAYS. Since Marlena’s possession in 1994(?), the stories have moved into stranger territory with memory implants and life restoratives and focusing on the weird and fantastic instead of solid storytelling.
DAYS has one of the best casts in daytime. Bill and Susan Seaforth-Hayes. Diedre Hall. Drake Hogestyn. Chandler Massey. Kristian Alfonso. Melissa Reeves. And more. They deserve better than stories that end up being DiMera manipulation through the machinations of Dr. Rolf and Kristin DiMera or mind control. Bring back the drama in daytime drama!
Jake and Vicky moved to another soap (as themselves. From Another World) and I missed this?!

What year did this happen? I am bummed that I would have had a chance to continue to watch them and missed it…
Jake and Vicky (and Cass and Lila, if I recall correctly) moved over to AS THE WORLD TURNS almost immediately after ANOTHER WORLD ended. Donna and Marley showed up occasionally as well. Vicky was soon killed off and eventually only Jake was left. He, too, was killed off in 2002 because he had no real connection to the ATWT families, though he was great in scenes with Lucinda and was romantically involved with Molly.
Cass made a few appearances on GUIDING LIGHT too.
Don’t know if you knew this, but ABC wanted to buy the Felicia Gallant character from Procter & Gamble/TeleNext Media, Inc., for a storyline that would cross over all four ABC soaps. P&G passed on the deal in case they decided to use the character again, and Linda Dano returned to ABC as Gretel “Rae” Cummings for the story.
That is awful!!! (in the sense that I didn’t know and thus missed years of continued Another World fun as a result). Of course, I would not have been happy about Vicky being killed off [albeit, as I’m a big Days fan, I’ve never really thought that “dying” truly meant “dying”] but the point would have been to watch bc of Vicky and Jake (just like a few yrs back, the point was to watch for Vicky and Ryan).
However I watched the show for a while — thru 3 iterations of Vickys (surprisingly liking all 3) — and I liked Jake the entire time so. I might have continued watching for him.
And Marley showing up is not at all surprising if Vicky was there. I would be baffled by her non-existence if her twin was on the show. (Altho bc of 30 yrs time, I am hazy on what happened to Marley after her plot against her sister ended up on the roof.)

Maybe NBC should ask ABC how well their replacements for All My Children and One Life to Live did – anyone remember the Tyra Banks show?
Maybe you should re-read the article (or read it if you just read the headline). NBC didn’t cancell the show, doesn’t want to cancel it (as of now). Coraday Productions made this move.
If negotiations are going so great, Corday wouldn’t have released the entire cast from their contracts. Whether NBC cancels the show or there’s no way to bring it back, there’s a good chance NBC will look for replacements.
Days has been my favorite Soap for years, until the JUMP that is. I don’t want to see it canceled, just not really jumped. The actors do a great job and deserves their pay not to be reduced. So glad the actress who played Claire is gone. She’s a terrible actress.
The jump literally happened at the very end on Friday. There has been one episode. So you’ve decided off ONE episode that it’s no longer your favorite??? weird.
No more GAME or TALK SHOWS! I’m sick of them and Reality TV shows. Too many so called Talent Shows at night too.
I’ve been waiting for years now to see what network, NBC or ABC, would be the first one to clear their slate of the daytime drama. I think it’s a bad move. That legacy stain will not be kind.
