Variety has named Dea Lawrence as its chief marketing officer.

As CMO, Lawrence will be responsible for driving Variety’s global branding and communications strategy. Lawrence will report to publisher Michelle Sobrino-Stearns and will be based in the company’s Los Angeles office.

“Dea is a born leader who possesses a unique combination of digital expertise and media savvy. Her talent and passion for the Variety brand will reinforce our market leadership and prove instrumental as we enter our next phase of growth,” said Sobrino-Stearns.

Prior to joining Variety, Lawrence held a series of executive sales and marketing positions in advertising technology and media. She was the VP Western Region for TubeMogul and was the head of Western sales for AT&T AdWorks. Lawrence also served as VP for PointRoll/Gannett where she executed numerous marketing campaigns for Fortune 500 brands.

She also held the position of VP of Digital Sales and Marketing for Variety and was instrumental in the creation, development, and growth of the business, as well as building and implementing the sales strategy for all online advertising sales. She exponentially increased online revenues and expanded the digital advertiser base to include auto, consumer electronics, travel, finance and retail. Additionally Lawrence forged partnerships, structured content deals and increased traffic. Prior to Variety, she was director of marketing at iFilm.
