Woodward welcomes increased public confidence in PSNI

Parliamentary Under Secretary of State Shaun Woodward MP

Security Minister Shaun Woodward MP has welcomed today’s publication by the Policing Board of the latest Omnibus Survey and said that its findings prove that public confidence in the police continues to grow.

The latest figures show that almost five out of every six respondents – or 83 per cent – had some degree of confidence in the PSNI’s ability to provide an ordinary day to day policing service for all the people of Northern Ireland, an increase of six per cent on the previous figure.

Shaun Woodward said: “These latest figures are extremely encouraging and it is clear that policing in Northern Ireland is moving forward. The latest figures show that public confidence in policing is up as is increased satisfaction with the work of the PSNI.

“These improved figures have not happened by accident. They are the result of the efforts by PSNI officers across Northern Ireland who are working to build relationships and trust with local communities.

“That work is beginning to pay dividends. The findings from the Omnibus survey compliment the latest PSNI statistics which showed the level of crime at a six year low.”

Notes to Editors

The Northern Ireland Policing Board publish the April 2005 Omnibus Survey results. These independent findings are the latest six-monthly survey figures on perception of the delivery of policing, the Policing Board and District Policing Partnerships.

They provide an important indicator in gauging progress towards meeting targets set for the Police Service of Northern Ireland in the Policing Plan and also to monitor public attitudes towards the Police Service of Northern Ireland, Policing Board and District Policing Partnerships.
