Toronto Public Library contributes 63 millionth record

DUBLIN, Ohio, USA,February 3, 2006—Toronto Public Library entered the 63 millionth record into WorldCat, the world’s largest database of bibliographic information, making it the first Canadian library to contribute an OCLC Gold Record.

The record was for the book Nicolai Klimii iter subterraneum, by Baron Ludvig Holdberg.  It was entered into WorldCat on January 18.

Toronto Public Library is the largest public library system in Canada, with 99 branches and more than 11 million items to borrow or use in the library.  In 2001, Toronto Public Library had the world’s second highest public library circulation, following only the Hong Kong Public Libraries.

“Canadian libraries have been great partners and contributors to OCLC,” said Daniel Boivin, Director, OCLC Canada.  “This recognition of Toronto Public Library illustrates the importance of Canadian content in WorldCat, and also serves as a reminder of all the great contributions Canadian libraries have made to the OCLC cooperative.”

WorldCat is the worldwide union catalog created and maintained collectively by thousands of OCLC member institutions.  With millions of online records built from the bibliographic and ownership information of contributing libraries, it is the largest and most comprehensive database of its kind.
