Honduras
map-ho.gif - 10344 Bytes Honduras suffered the greatest damage from Hurricane Mitch. After stalling off the northern coast of Honduras, the storm traveled inland on October 30-31, 1998, leaving a trail of widespread destruction. In some places wind velocities reached more than 180 miles-per-hour, and over 6 feet of rain fell.

The severe flooding and landslides that resulted caused more than 5,000 deaths, over 12,000 injuries, and over 8,000 missing. It also destroyed many homes and severely damaged or destroyed much of the infrastructure. Flooding of the Choluteca River, and other rivers, cut new channels and scoured the land surface. This resulted in large deposits of sediment on the coastal plain and on agricultural fields, particularly those adjacent to the Choluteca River.
