News and Upcoming events

Plans for 2006:

On 2 February at Yale University, I'll give the annual Reni Celeste Memorial Cinema Studies Lecture; the subject will be the aesthetics of CinemaScope. On the next day, I'll be visiting a seminar directed by my host, Professor Dudley Andrew. I'll try to announce times and places as they become available.

Between 30 March and 2 April, we'll be holding our annual Wisconsin Film Festival here in Madison. It's always a great event, with over 200 titles screened. Information and updates may be found here.

I'll be visiting Hong Kong between 3 April and 19 April for the annual Hong Kong International Film Festival, a real feast of worldwide cinema and a necessity for lovers of Hong Kong film. The historical sidebars mounted by the Hong Kong Film Archive are exceptional. The food is good too. The schedule will be posted here.

In early June I'll visit Denmark. I'll be at the University of Aarhus from 7 through 9 June, giving three lectures. Then I'll be in Copenhagen for the seminar "100 Years of Nordisk Film," held at the Danish Film Institute 15-16 June. My paper is called " Nordisk Films and the 1910s Aesthetic." This should be a valuable event for helping us understand early Scandinavian cinema. Further scheduling information will appear on the Institute's website.

In early July I expect to attend the Cinema Ritrovato, a wonderful assembly of restored and rediscovered films from all over the world and all periods of film history. Peter von Bagh, Gian Luca Farinelli, and all their colleagues do an extraordinary job finding both classics and obscure gems for their screenings. You can read about last year's event here.

Later that month comes the fifth biennial conference of the Center for the Cognitive Study of the Moving Image, presided over by Joe Anderson; the membership is made up of bold and energetic media scholars. Peter Wuss of the Konrad Wolf Academy of Film and Television in Potsdam- Babelsberg will be hosting the event, which takes place 20-23 July. The title of this year's conference is "Narration and Spectatorship in Moving Images: Perception, Imagination, Emotion." Further information is available here.
