Student Aid Fund for Nonregistrants

PLEASE NOTE: Application deadline is September 1.

This special non-budget fund was established in 1983 and is now administered by the Mennonite Church USA Executive Board peace advocate office. The purpose is to help replace potential government grants and loans lost by students who for reasons of Christian conscience choose not to register with the U.S. Selective Service System. Applicants are asked to complete a statement outlining their reasons for choosing not to register.

Why might some men decide not to register? These links help answer the question:
*  Central Committee for Conscientious Objectors
*  Center on Conscience & War
The goal of the Student Aid Fund for Nonregistrants (SAFNR) is to replace the same amount of grants and loans that young men are denied. SAFNR is available
  to any nonregistrant attending a Mennonite Church USA college or seminary and
  to any nonregistrant attending a congregation of Mennonite Church USA and enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies in other-than-Mennonite institutions.

State of funding

Funds for grants, loans, mailings and staff time to administer this program come solely from donations.

Thanks to your contributions of $9,674 since last fall’s fundraising letter we have been able to provide the $9,000 required for three grants and the minimal costs of program administration. We needed to borrow $15,000 to provide the four new loans. In addition we have an additional loan of $6,000 to cover previous loans which are being repaid by students. Our goal is to become self-sufficient over the next few years by reducing the need to borrow these funds.

Specifically, we have set a goal of raising $20,000 in contributions between now and November 30, 2005, to reduce our reliance on loans (and the interest expense) and to provide funds for new grants, loans, and extra visibility.

Mennonite Foundation administers the loans, and we offer them our gratitude for this service to the church.

For more information, read the guidelines. To apply, print out this application form (14k PDF) and mail it to the address below.

We invite

  your prayers for these young men during this time of heightened patriotism. Some states are considering denying drivers' licenses to nonregistrants, along with other punitive measures (contact Titus Peachey, MCC US, , with questions);
  your contributions to the fund;
  your suggestions of other people and congregations who might want to contribute.
