THE FINAL  LIVE FINAL PHOTO GALLERY

STEVE DAVIS 6-10 DING JUNHUI 61(37)-23, 40-72, 8-133(111), 61-33, 15-92(35), 124(81)-0, 0-81(81), 44-80, 45(40)-90, 53-45, 39(39)-78(77c), 0-137(52,78), 72(72)-8, 22-75(42), 75(74)-29, 44-52(36)

The excitement is building, a capacity crowd is crowding into the Barbican and we're all set for what promises to be a magnificent final. The ultimate challenge of youth versus experience. In terms of the difference in ages, there is a remarkable 29 years and 222 days between the two players, the largest age gap ever in a major ranking tournament final.

After a stupendous ovation for both players, we're into the action and it's been Davis all the way in the opener. The Nugget gave Ding a glimmer of a chance but he missed a tough red along the rail and Davis cleared up. Davis has let a red slip by the centre pocket at the start of the second, but Ding's only put 24 points on the board and now he's butchered a safety shot and left Davis with the easiest of openers. He's not made much of that, the frame's a bit scrappy and nervy, but Steve is back in again, trails just 41-36, but the last two reds need dislodging from the side cushion. Well Ding's scrabbled a few balls together in a forgettable frame. Davis Trails by 27 on the blue, but he's playing on. Ding's got his act together in frame three and takes a 2-1 lead with a quick fire break of 111, his 60th career century already and his ninth in this event. It's another protracted frame. Davis has taken it to level at the first interval, which will provide a chance for both players to take stock and settle down. Ding's edged ahead again, but another frame that's needed several chances. Steve's levelled up again. He's dominated the sixth frame although it's taken a few visits to secure the points, but he's cleared up in style with an excellent 81. And now Ding's matched that with 81 of his own. The key last frame of the session is underway. Will we be all square going into tonight's final dramatic frames or will Ding gain a valuable 5-3 lead? Ding's opened with 27 but missed the easiest of reds. Steve's added 33 to his account but we're into a safety exchange now. Five reds clustered round the pink and two in the open. Ding's clinched it and will lead 5-3 when we resume LIVE at 8pm.

Well what drama already tonight. The ovation given to Steve Davis as he entered the arena tonight was such as is only reserved for the truly great in their sport. And we've had a drama packed 38 minute opening frame. Ding's safety play was of the very highest quality and he trapped Steve in snooker after snooker after snooker. In all Davis gave away 33 points in fouls, but he clawed his way back into contention with a run of 40, but last twist of luck went Ding's way when he left the last red in the jaws, but covered it and Davis couldn't pot it off a cushion. The tenth is see-sawing both ways. Davis opened with 22, Ding responded with 27 and led 45-22 but he's missed a red to the corner and the Davis fight back has commenced. Davis now needs to clear the colours to pull a frame back. Davis is right back in it at 4-6 and he's started brightly with 39 in the next, but he's missed a blue and let Ding in on the next red. It's going to be a three frame again for Ding. He's stroked in a break of 77. It's already looking like 8-4. Ding is on a break of 49 and looking very strong now. The break's ended at 52 as Ding failed to catch the pack off the green. But he's found the baulk cushion and Steve has another uphill struggle on his hands. Ding's mopped up the frame and lead 8-4 at the last interval. Two frames needed for victory, it looks a near impossible task for the six times former champion to come back, but stranger things have happened in snooker. Well Davis isn't going down without a fight. He's powered through the next, clinching the frame in one visit. A brisk 22 by Davis but he's missed a red to the middle and Ding's got a good chance again here. Dings made a mess of his position on 33. So the frame is anyone's from here. Ding's got another chance and is now 31 ahead with 4 reds on. One majestic last break from Davis, 74, kept him in the match but try as he may the writing was on the wall in the next. Ding made 36, Davis countered with 31, but Ding ran out the winner on the colours, with Davis failing to get a snooker on the pink.

SEMI FINALS

Ding Junhui 9-4 Joe Perry 0-79(59), 93(54)-32, 100(100)-0, 72-20, 47(39)-60, 84(76)-63(39), 129(129)-0, 0-76(76), 73(48)-1, 71(39)-61, 74-4

It's first blood to Joe Perry in today's intriguing semi final against Chinese star Ding Junhui. A solid break of 59 for the Chatteris man. Nothing much in it in the second. Perry leads 32-21 with 7 reds left, but ding's just slotted a long red and is nicely on the green. He's needed a few chances this frame, but Ding's got his first frame on the board and now both players can settle into the match. A fabulous 100 from Ding has sparked the match into life. that is Ding's eighteenth century of the season and he's out ahead at the Top of the Ton Table. Ding's won a scrappy fourth to lead 3-1. Apart from his century, which was nothing short of sensational, including a left-handed plant along the top cushion and an array of exhibition shots, the match has been largely scrappy so far. Another messy frame goes to Perry with a colours clearance. Perry got a kick on a red right in amongst the balls and Ding has dished up to open a two frame cushion. Now he's powered in his second ton of the match to lead 5-2. Perry really needs the last frame of the session. And he's got that with an excellent run of 76 to trail 5-3.

The evening session is underway. A couple of chances have gone begging for either player. We could be in for a very nervy run to the line. Perry has worked his way to a 57-22 lead but the frame isn't safe. There's 43 left for Ding to attack. He hasn't managed it and Perry's closed the gap to one frame. It's tit for tat again as Ding steams through frame ten to regain his two frame buffer. Perry's opened a 52 point lead in frame eleven, but it's not conclusive and he's let Ding in with a decent chance to compile a break. Ding's bounced right back into the frame, he's got a 10 point lead and they're on the green. Needing a snooker on the pink, Perry has unintentionally fluked it so that's another frame to Ding and the gap is growing ominously now. Nothing substantial from Ding in the next, a thirty and forty odd is enough to put him within a frame of victory at the final interval. Ding's is in the final and he's finished in style with a century, his third of the match, his fourth here in York, his eighth overall in the UK and his twentieth this season, four more than anyone else.

Steve Davis 9-6 Stephen Hendry 94(45,45)-0, 55(27c)-52, 64(35)-53, 67(33)-0, 78(32)-36(30), 1-72(52), 67(57)-24, 87(87)-4, 23-65, 75(75)-27, 16-64(49), 39-61, 0-130(130), 25-76, 66(66c)-59(54)

A thrilling start to this historic match. Both players received a tumultuous welcome from the packed audience, the atmosphere inside the arena is awesome. GSC was privileged to be inside getting new exclusive photos, hence the slight delay to your match notes. But Davis, much to the delight of the crowd played a flawless first frame and then pounced on a missed Hendry pink, to clear from yellow to steal the second on the black. A good start for the Nugget, but Hendry's amongst the balls early in the third frame. Hendry dominated the frame until Davis fluked the last red and eventually potted a long thin pink to take a very useful 3-0 lead. It's Davis all the way, another fluke and a couple of evil snookers and he's 4-0 at the interval. Hendry is heading for the practice table on his break, while Davis will enjoy his cup of tea. For those who like a bet you could have had 28-1 on Davis leading 4-0 after the first session. The Davis fairytale continues. Hendry won a quality safety exchange, but fluffed a routine red and in a couple of visits Davis accumulated enough points to put another frame on the board. A determined looking Hendry is on a run of 28 in the sixth frame and he must produce the goods pretty quickly now. The break's ended on 52 as Hendry failed to develop the reds, but it's a good lead with 8 reds left. At last Hendry's got his name on the board, will this inspire a comeback from the seven times world champion? And there's another frame for Davis. Hendry's gone out to compose himself and try to get the last of the afternoon for a bit of damage limitation. Well you just couldn't write a script like this. 150-1 before the start of the tournament, a one visit break and Davis leads 7-1, just two frames away from a place in his 100th final. Play resumes at 7pm and can even Stephen Hendry find anyway to stop the Nugget? We're under way again in this make or break session. A bit of hit and miss so far from both players. Hendry holds 41-21 lead but there are still four reds left. The Scot's done enough to secure the frame. He's started the tenth with a cracking long red but only made 16 and we're back to a safely battle now. Hendry couldn't take advantage and Davis has powered further ahead with a flawless 75 and now leads 8-2. Hendry has broken down yet again on 49 and Davis' counter attack could take him to the winning line. But not quite yet, Davis has missed and Hendry has clawed a frame back. Hendry's managed to take the frame into the last interval, a great last red down the rail and a clearance to the pink. Hendry's found some form from somewhere and taken this frame in one visit with a sublime 130 break. Hendry's started in style in the next, he forced Davis into a hard pot, which he missed. The Scot's countered with 33 but an horrendous kick has ended the break and Davis is straight back amongst the balls. Davis has missed a long pink, Hendry has pounced and it's 8-6 and getting very tense. Hendry was well on course to pull back to 8-7. Cruising on a break of 54 but he missed a black off its spot and there's enough for Davis to close out the match. CAN he hold his nerve now? We're onto the yellow, Davis trails 39-59, he needs them all to clinch a fabulous victory and write yet another page in snooker's records books. Just blue to black to reach his 100th final. Just the black - and it's hard and he's got it.

QUARTER FINALS

Joe Perry 9-8 Stuart Bingham 94(94)-3, 80(73)-31, 34-101(70), 38-64, 69(46)-41(41), 12-100(92), 4-104(63), 97(61)-20, 68(68)-75(68), 129(101)-0, 51-61(61), 54-45, 9-77(44), 23-74(57), 101(100)-0, 79-14

A storming start by Joe Perry with breaks of 94 and 73, but not to be outdone Stuart Bingham has rallied with a run of 70 and we look to be in for a high quality encounter. Perry's pounced on a Bingham miss in frame 5 and cleared from behind with 47 to take a 3-2 lead. A great reply from Bingham with a 92 clearance to the pink. This is a thoroughly enjoyable match. Bingham's taken an early 30 point lead in frame seven and he tries to move ahead for the first time. We apologise for the brief disruption to our service, which has been caused by a power surge at the Barbican! Bingham's got a snooker and taken pink and black to move ahead after Perry had racked up a 68 break. It seems neither player can open a significant lead, Perry's bounced back again to level at 5-5. This match could be heading for a dramatic conclusion unless someone can break the stalemate. Maybe Perry can. That's a stunning 101 clearance to take him back in the lead for the first time since he led at 3-2. But back comes Bingham again and it's 6-6 as they head off for their final interval. It's still tit for tat as Perry sneaks ahead once again in a low-scoring frame. A late run of 44 has brought Bingham back level yet again and they're not giving an inch and you couldn't call a winner. It's going to be a final frame decider, as Perry rattles in a timely century to level the scores at 8-8. The impetus remains with Joe Perry, just one point for Bingham and Perry is on a run of 32 so far, but he's missed the pink. Plenty of points on the board, but the black's tied up and so are 3 or 4 reds on the cushions and no obvious opener for Bingham. A safety battle has developed and now every red is tucked up on a cushion, could be a tense conclusion. Perry chipped away a few more reds and he holds a substantial 57-8 lead with 4 reds left, he's in the driving seat now. Here's one last chance for Bingham, but the last red reds are still clustered on the top cushion so it's unlikely to be a one visit clearance. And it isn't. The writing looks to be on the wall now for Bingham. Perry's found another red, he's 44 up with only 43 left, so Bingham needs a snooker.

Ding Junhui 9-5 Neil Robertson 97(77)-10, 11-64(53), 102(102)-29, 23-71(50), 76-66, 90(65)-0, 39(39)-65(33), 89(54)-0, 69(48)-16, 100(79)-25, 48(48)-59, 86(48)-17, 33-73(65), 92(92)-36

Ding, supported by a large Chinese contingent in the audience, rocketed out of the blocks with a break of 77. Robertson's settled down with a run of 53 but Ding's upped the stakes with a superb 102. Robertson's rattled up 60 to start the next, but he's broken down and given Ding a chance to counter. This is set to be a high-speed shoot out between the two international young guns. A see-saw fifth frame has gone to Ding. He opened an early 40 point lead, Robertson countered but couldn't close out the frame and the Chinese star has cleared up to regain the lead. Ding's looking dangerous again, on 51 and counting. The Aussie's faltered again in frame seven. An opening 32 but Ding's back at the table racking up the points, 39 already. There seems to be little that Robertson can do to stem the flow of points from Ding's cue. A fluent break of 79 takes the Chinese teenager to within two frames of victory. Neil's kept his hopes alive, stealing a frame in which Ding opened with 48 but broke down. Robertson's revival is short-lived and now he's at the point of no return. Despite an early easy miss by Ding, the Aussie couldn't capitalise and Ding has rattled up a 61 clearance to move within a frame of the semi finals. Robertson is battling on, he's snatch a scrappy 13th frame to stay in the match. Ding has convincingly won the next to book his place in the semi finals.

Allister Carter 7-9 Stephen Hendry 8-83(83), 29-71(55), 50(42)-76(39), 74(46)-18, 22,72(42), 105(105)-0, 104(104)-25, 26-67, 2-65(51), 45-53, 70(61)-51(44), 73(73)-1, 84(57)-7, 62(61)-37, 0-99(64)

A great start for Hendry, who has regain his World No. 1 spot, provisionally. Carter's had chances in all three frames but hasn't capitalised. Carter's got his name on the board at last. He broke down on 46 but Hendry didn't punish him this time and he's cleared up and will feel a bit happier now at the first interval. Hendry's nicked another frame from under Carter's nose to lead 4-1, but Carter's bounced back with a superb 105, which was on course for a 147 until he missed the 14th black. Now Carter's right back in the match, back to back centuries brings him back to 4-3. Hendry's ended the Carter revival, taking the last frame of their first session. The match resumes at 7pm.

It's a cagey start to the evening session as Carter tries to reduce his arrears, but he's let Hendry in with an early chance to accumulate some points. Hendry's break has moved on to 51, despite an interruption due to disturbance in the audience. This afternoon one jester took a whoopee cushion into the arena! The Scot has moved further ahead with a run of 51 and he could run away with this is Carter doesn't capitalise on every chance that comes his way. Carter's broken down on 30 in the next but Hendry's only made 31 before letting a red slip away so it's anybodies frame. Hendry's countered to steal that one on the black. Hendry's slipped up on a run of 44 and Carter's grabbed that opportunity to put another frame on his side of the board with an excellent 61 clearance. Hendry's powered to a break of 54 in frame 12, but he's missed a tough red down the rail and there's hope still for Carter with 7 reds left still. Carter's not giving up without a fight, he's constructed a flawless break of 73 to reduce the deficit to 8-5 but he's still got a mountain to climb. He's another rung up the ladder, a break of 57 easily enough to clinch frame 14. Carter's got another chance in the next, Hendry's broken down on 36 and Carter can really apply the pressure here if he can clear up. And he can, he's compiled a frame winning 61 to get right back into contention. Henry is beginning to look jittery. He's missed a red on 35 in frame 16 when he had the match at his mercy. But it's all over now, Hendry's back in and calmly clearing the table to book his semi final place.

Steve Davis 9-7 Ken Doherty 82(40)-56, 85(54)-4, 77(48)-44(36), 85(40,36)-48(48), 92(81)-4, 59-67(36)(re-spot), 101(56)-0, 68(60)-16, 73(73)-57(57), 30-74, 75-44, 0-126(61), 41(41)-79(79), 38(33)-88(68), 70(47)-67(38)

A real dogfight here in the opening frame of what promises to be a canny encounter. It took 53 minutes before Davis broke the deadlock. Doherty produced one dramatic shot in the frame when he launched both white and yellow off the table, nearly decapitating a cameraman and member of the audience! Davis is back in the groove in frame two, already onto a break of 54, picking up where he left off after his memorable performance against Stephen Maguire last night. Doherty's first amongst the balls in the third frame, he's opened a 34 point lead so far. But he's broken down and the Nugget is counter-attacking, on 24 at the moment. Davis added a late run of 48 and now has a handy 3-0 lead in a match still largely dominated by tactical play. Davis ha got the better of the fourth frame as well and will thoroughly enjoy his mid session break. It seems that Davis just can't miss this week and he's stroked in a break of 81 to stretch his lead to 5-0. This is beginning to look very ominous for Doherty. At last a slice of luck for the Irishman. He held a comfortable lead which Davis negated, coming back to earn a re-spot black, but the luck of the Irish smiled on Doherty with a fortuitous fluke on the black and at last he's got his name on the board. Davis has added frame 7 and enjoys a 6-1 lead ahead of tonight's session.

A predictably tactical start to the final session. The reds are scattered like confetti round the table and the players are keeping the white tight to the top cushion. It will be a golden chance for a big break should someone make an error. The first chance has fallen to Doherty and he must win this frame to retain any realistic chance of salvaging the match. Ken's run in a break of 60 but he's not clinched the frame and Davis is battling on. A rare miss by Davis and Doherty is on a run of 40. He lost position but salvaged it with the thinnest of clipped reds to the middle pocket. Doherty's missed the black off its spot on 57while trying to retain position for a possible maximum.  and Davis has pounced with a superb break of 73 to the pink. All to play for in the next. Doherty leads 46-22 with two reds left. Doherty's nicked the final red and leads 59-30 on the brown. He's won another one. Doherty dominated the 11th frame and he's right back in the match. The Doherty revival has shuddered to a halt in the next. He's missed on 41 and Davis is already on a run of 45. Davis made 53 and then forced Doherty into an error from a snooker and it's 8-4. He's got one foot in the semi finals. But he may have to wait a while yet as Doherty leads by 53 in the 13th frame. One more on the board for Doherty and he's clinging on. Davis has started with 41 in the next but lost position. He's left a red teetering in the jaws to give the Irishman an easy starter. Ken's pieced together 30 so far and there's four reds left, all in the open. It's all square at 41 each and Doherty now has the frame at his mercy. He's cleared up with 79 and it really is "game on" now. A huge slice of luck for Davis in frame 15. He missed a red but fluked it in the opposite top pocket and his break has moved on to 33 so far. But he's missed and left a chance for Doherty and it may well be his last chance of the match. A superb effort by Doherty, a break of 68 gives him a 34 point lead on the yellow, it should be 8-7 now. The match is hanging by a thread now. Davis opened with 47, Doherty's countered with 51 and we're  on the last red now. Davis has got the last red, he's got a narrow 3 point lead on the yellow, but he's not on it. Doherty's got the yellow and green, but the brown is safe, tight on the top cushion. The tension is palpable as a safety duel develops on the brown. All the balls are in the open awaiting an error from either player. Doherty has forced a foul from Davis on the brown and it's been called a miss, so he's got a 7 point lead and Davis still has to escape the snooker. Doherty's missed the brown and here's a good chance for Davis to clinch the match. It's in but he's not got ideal position on the blue, it's not over yet! He's got a super blue to the middle but is now faced with a thin pink for the match and - he's missed it! Davis needs pink, Doherty needs both balls to stay in the match. A fabulous pink by Doherty, it's all on the black. Doherty's jawed a long black to the yellow pocket, but he's left it safe, unless Davis attempts a near impossible pot down the rail. Davis has won, he's doubled the final black for victory and he'll now face his old rival Stephen Hendry in the semi finals.
