About the Education Foundation

The mission of National Geographic's Education Foundation is to motivate and enable each new generation to become geographically literate.

To help achieve that goal, the Education Foundation is working in several key focus areas:

Grantmaking
The Foundation awards more than five million dollars each year to educators and to schools, districts, universities, conservation groups, and other educational organizations to support Model Programs in Geography Education and to energize an active grassroots network of local professors, K-12 educators and others across the nation through Education Network Grants.

Federal Policy Reform
Currently, all core academic disciplines except geography receive U.S. federal help. National Geographic is leading the charge to fix that by working with Congress on a Policy Initiative.

Public Engagement
Recent polls, such as the National Geographic-Roper Poll 2002 Global Geographic Literacy Survey, show that young Americans lack major geographic skills and knowledge they will need to succeed in the 21st century. The Education Foundation is currently planning a public engagement strategy to energize parents and educational leaders that will launch in 2006.

Outreach
The Foundation supports national outreach programs for children, educators, families, and communities, such as National Geographic's annual public-awareness campaign, Geography Action!
