Primary schoolsThe only maintained primary school (a school for which an Local Education Authority (LEA) have financial & administrative responsibility over) in the City of London is the Sir John Cass’s Foundation Primary School which is voluntary aided taking pupils aged from 4 - 11 years. Residents are able to send their children to schools in neighbouring LEAs. Secondary schoolsAs there are no maintained secondary schools in the Square Mile, pupils transferring to secondary school after year six attend schools in neighbouring boroughs, such as Islington, Tower Hamlets, Westminster and Southwark. Children permanently resident in the City of London also have priority admission to the City of London Academy (Southwark) at secondary transfer age. It is a mixed comprehensive school sponsored by the City of London and is situated in Lynton Road, Southwark. Academies are publicly funded schools, but independent of the LEA where they are located. The Governors set the admission arrangements. Independent schoolsAn independent school is a school which is is mainly fee paying and not dependent upon national or local government for financing.
