So spooky: Sci-fi
me-toos start strong

All three new series place well in their timeslots

Sep 21, 2005

Does anybody remember Friends wannabes like Boston Common, Its Like, You Know and Coupling? Not really, and thats the point: Very few knockoffs of successful formulas are successful themselves.
Except, apparently, when it comes to the supernatural genre made popular last season by ABCs Lost and NBCs Medium.
This season is full of supernatural-themed shows, and somewhat surprisingly, three that have already launched--The WB's "Supernatural," CBS's "Threshold" and NBC's "Surface"--have gotten off to very good starts.
The WB started things off during the week ended Sept. 18 with the Tuesday 9 p.m. premiere of Supernatural. The show earned a 2.5 rating among the WBs target 12-34 audience, an impressive No. 2 in its timeslot, and also did well among viewers 18-49.
Supernatural scored a 2.5 among 18-49s, holding 89.3 percent of lead-in Gilmore Girls audience and helping the network to its highest-rated Tuesday night in that demo since 2003.
Last Friday it was CBSs turn, as it aired a two-hour premiere special of Threshold at 9 p.m. The show was No. 1 that night with a 2.9 rating among 18-49s, and it led CBS to a comfortable first-place finish for the night in the demo.
It was nearly 50 percent above last season's 18-49 average of former 9 p.m. timeslot occupant "JAG."
Monday, NBC premiered Surface at 8 p.m., and it did especially well when you consider the competition it faced. The show pulled a 3.8 rating and finished second only to ABCs coverage of a special Monday Night Football game between the New Orleans Saints and New York Giants.
"Surface" grew from a 3.5 during the 8-8:30 p.m. half hour to a 4.1 from 8:30-9 p.m. and outperformed the 3.8 CBS averaged for the season premieres of the comedies The King of Queens and How I Met your Mother.
There are two other supernatural shows with highly anticipated premieres this week: ABCs Invasion, which launches tonight at 10 p.m. after Lost, and CBSs The Ghost Whisperer, which premieres Friday night at 8 p.m. before the second episode of Threshold.

Meanwhile, in other broadcast ratings for the week ended Sept. 18:

Among adults 18-49, boosted by the Emmys and "Survivor," CBS finished first for the week with a 3.6 average rating and a 10 share, followed by Fox at 3.1/9, ABC at 2.7/8, NBC at 2.2/6, the WB at 1.4/4 and UPN at 1.0/3.

Among adults 18-34, Fox was first with a 3.1 average rating and a 10 share, with CBS second at 2.7/9, ABC third at 2.2/7, NBC fourth at 1.7/6, the WB fifth at 1.4/5 and UPN sixth at 1.1/4.

Among adults 25-54, CBS was first with a 4.4 average and an 11 share, Fox and ABC tied for second at 3.1/8, NBC fourth at 2.7/7, the WB fifth at 1.4/4 and UPN sixth 1.0/3.

Top five (18-49s): 1. Monday Night Football (ABC) 7.9; 2. Survivor: Guatemala (CBS) 6.6; 3. Emmy Awards (CBS) 6.1; 4. House (Fox) 5.9; T5. NFL Postgame (CBS), CSI (CBS) 4.9.

Top five (total viewers): 1. Monday Night Football (ABC) 19.6 million; 2. Emmy Awards (CBS)  18.68 million; 3. Survivor: Guatemala (CBS) 18.41 million; 4. House (Fox) 15.91 million; 5. CSI (CBS) 14.48 million.

Bottom five (18-49s): T98. Smallville (WB), Cuts (UPN), Cuts Special (UPN), R U the Girl (UPN) Veronica Mars (UPN), Eve (UPN) 0.9; T104 Half and Half (UPN), Eve (UPN) 0.8; 106. One Tree Hill (WB) 0.6.

Bottom five (total viewers): 102. Smallville (WB) 2.07 million; 103. Half and Half (UPN) 2.04 million; 104. R U the Girl: Encore (UPN) 2 million; 105. Eve (UPN) 1.99 million; 106. One Tree Hill (WB) 1.51 million.

Show on the rise: Prison Break, Fox, Monday 9 p.m. Helping Fox build momentum going into premiere week, Prison Break averaged a 4.5 rating among 18-49s, a 15 percent boost over the previous weeks 3.9.

Show on the decline: George Lopez, ABC, Wednesday 8 p.m. Not exactly the type of momentum youre looking for headed into fall, two repeat episodes of G. Los sitcom averaged just a 1.9 rating among 18-49s last week after two reruns averaged a 2.3 during the week ended Sept. 11.
